The questioner : Our Shaykh, a woman had a sick son.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : So she vowed to Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, that if her son were healed, she would fast for two months. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, healed her son... and praise be to Allah. But before she could fast, she passed away. So who should fast on her behalf?

The Shaykh: Her guardian, based on his saying, (peace and blessings be upon him):
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone dies in a state (that he had to complete) some fasts, his heir must fast on his behalf. مَن مات وعليه صيام ؛ صامَ عنه وليُّه
Sahih Muslim 1147
.

The questioner: Our Shaykh, her son is very young, and her relatives are not willing to fast on her behalf.

The Shaykh: They are sinful, and she is free of blame. But her son, when he grows up and enters the age of accountability and realizes that his mother had a vow to fast for two months, he must fast on her behalf when he reaches the age of accountability.

The questioner: Is it not permissible for any of us to fast on her behalf ever?

The Shaykh: Is it not?

The questioner: Is it not permissible for any of us to fast on her behalf?

The Shaykh: No, no. After his saying, (peace and blessings be upon him):
His guardian fasts on his behalf. صامَ عنه وليُّه
and His saying, (Glorified and Exalted is He):
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives وَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَى
[An-Najm 53:39]
; it is not recommended, rather it is not permissible, for anyone to fast on behalf of another, as Imam Malik narrated in "al-Muwatta" with a sound chain from Abdullah ibn Umar:
No one can fast أنه لا يصوم أحدٌ عن أحدٍ
Muwatta Malik 18:46
.
