The Shaykh : So this questioner proceeded in accordance with this Sunnah, observing the etiquette of Islam. He did not say, “O Ibn ‘Umar,” but rather, “O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman.” He said: “My father has passed away, and he bequeathed a camel of his in the cause of Allah. This is my cousin, and he is in the army of Ibn al-Zubayr. Should I hand the camel over to him?” Ibn ‘Umar said: “O my son, the cause of Allah is every righteous deed.” He meant that the cause of Allah is a broad door, not limited to providing this camel to the army of Ibn al-Zubayr. And regarding Ibn al-Zubayr, there is the flaw I mentioned earlier, which will be made explicit. “The cause of Allah is every righteous deed. So if your father only bequeathed his camel in the cause of Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—and you intend to place the bequest in its appropriate place without doubt or hesitation, then do what I am telling you: ‘When you see a group of Muslims fighting a group of polytheists, then hand the camel over to them.’” Because this is jihad in the cause of Allah, and there is no doubt about it. “As for this one”—meaning Ibn al-Zubayr—“and his companions”—meaning the army to which you want to provide the camel based on your cousin’s request—“they are the boys of a people, any one of whom places the seal.” This is an allusive phrase indicating that this man and his followers are merely followers of a group of young men competing for who will hold the seal, meaning the ring, i.e., who will hold the leadership that usually entails the authority to issue orders and seal them. Who holds the seal usually holds the leadership, and the sealing and management of affairs are for this leader. So here, Ibn ‘Umar hints at Ibn al-Zubayr, indicating that this man is not currently fighting the army of the Muslims, ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, in the cause of Allah, so that you would provide your camel to him. Rather, look at the Muslims when they fight the polytheists, and then provide the camel to those Muslims. As for these people, they are seekers of leadership and dominance. This is how Ibn al-Zubayr was judged. And without a doubt, this judgment is an opinion from Ibn ‘Umar, which may be correct or may be incorrect.
