Did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) combine prayers when he was staying in Tabuk?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: His EminenceThe Shaykh : Nasir al-Din (may Allah protect him), during the time the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Tabuk, did he combine the two prayers? We have found that some of the brothers combine prayers when they stay in a place during a journey; are they correct?

The Shaykh : The question is clear, but it is lengthy without benefit; because the crux of the question is its final part. If one asked: Did the Messenger (peace be upon him) combine prayers when he was staying in Tabuk? and the answer came back—say: I do not know, as is the reality, because it is not reported, or if we assumed he did not combine them; does that prevent combining if it is established in other hadiths? Of course, it does not. So why did you limit the question to combining in the Battle of Tabuk? It is reported in the Muwatta of Imam Malik and elsewhere that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and perhaps I am saying now... perhaps that was on the journey to Tabuk, and it does not concern us from a jurisprudential perspective whether the incident was in Tabuk or elsewhere, but rather it was on a journey. The narrator of the hadith, who is Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), said that when the time for the midday prayer arrived, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out—meaning from his tent—and ordered the call to prayer, and he combined the midday and afternoon prayers. Then he went in, and when the time for the sunset prayer arrived, he went out again, called the adhan and the iqamah, and combined the sunset and night prayers. Thus, combining is established for the traveler who is staying. As for when he is moving and walking, there is disagreement on that, but this hadith establishes the permissibility of combining even in the case of a traveler staying at a stage of his journey. Therefore, one should not doubt the permissibility of such combining.
