The Shaykh : Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in a new chapter explaining another expression of the Messenger (peace be upon him) regarding the boycotting of a Muslim. He said, "The chapter on one who boycotts his brother for a year." Then he narrated with his authentic chain from Abu Khurash al-Sulami that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
If one keeps apart from his brother for a year, it is like shedding his blood. مَن هجر أخاه سنة فهو بسفك دمه
Sunan Abi Dawud 4915Sahih (Al-Albani)
,
If one keeps apart from his brother for a year, it is like shedding his blood. من هجر أخاه سنةً فهو بسفك دمه
Sunan Abi Dawud 4915Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and in a narration in "Sunan Abu Dawud" that supports a narration the author will mention:
If one keeps apart from his brother for a year, it is like shedding his blood. مَن هجرَ أخاه سنةً فهو كسفك دمه
Sunan Abi Dawud 4915Sahih (Al-Albani)
. This is the author's narration with "spilling his blood"; it was narrated as "like spilling his blood," and the meaning is approximately the same, namely that boycotting a Muslim brother for a full year is equivalent to killing him and spilling his blood. This is a very great sin. Therefore, if a person falls into boycotting his Muslim brother without right due to some matter, such as a psychological outburst of anger, as we mentioned earlier, whereas boycotting with right, you have known, is like the boycotting of 'Aishah of her nephew 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, if a Muslim falls into boycotting his Muslim brother without right, he has a respite of three nights only, as a means of relieving the self and the anger. Then he must restrain the reins of his self, not go to extremes, and not exceed three nights. Then, if a person does not return to his senses and does not come back to his right mind, and enters the third night and the fourth night and the fourth day, and so on, he must hasten to repent, return, and come back, and not continue, lest it become a habit for him, and the year enters the boycotting while he is fully immersed in his boycotting, continuing in his error. At that time, it becomes like spilling the blood of the one he boycotted and abandoned, if he reaches a year in the boycotting. A second narration from the same first path, but with the wording: A man from the Aslam tribe, a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), informed him—meaning the narrator of the hadith, who is 'Imran ibn Abi 'Anas—from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
The boycott of a believer for a year is like his blood هجرة المؤمن سنة كدمه
. This is like the narration of Abu Dawud. The narration of Abu Dawud says:
Like shedding his blood كسفك دمه
, and this one says:
Like his blood كدمه
. The intended meaning is that it is as if he spilled his blood. The complete hadith.
In the gathering were Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Attab, and they said, "We have heard this from him." This means that the Tabi'i of the hadith, who is here in this hadith 'Imran ibn Abi 'Anas, when he narrated this hadith in his gathering, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Attab were in that gathering. Each of them was a Tabi'i who met more than one Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). These two Tabi'is, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Attab, when they heard 'Imran ibn Abi 'Anas narrating that a man from the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed him from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
The boycotting of a believer for a year is like his blood. هجرة المؤمن سنة كدَمِه
, what did these two Tabi'is, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Attab, say? "We have heard this from him." And this is a hadithical benefit, meaning that 'Imran ibn Abi 'Anas did not have the exclusive hearing of this hadith from the Aslami Companion, but rather two other Tabi'is shared in that with him, one of whom was Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and the other 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Attab. Thus, three known Tabi'is are available in the narration of this hadith from this Aslami Companion, that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
The boycotting of a believer for a year is like spilling his blood. هجرة المؤمن سنةً كسفك دَمِه
.
