From the lessons of "Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib," an explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: (Blessed is the slave who holds the reins of his horse, striving in the cause of Allah upon it)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... but there are other people who do not have this wealth, and they can be like this one or better than him by other qualities that the first wealthy man may not possess.
He says of this slave:
Paradise is for him who holds the reins of his horse to strive in Allah's Cause, with his hair unkempt and feet covered with dust: if he is appointed in the vanguard, he is perfectly satisfied with his post of guarding, and if he is appointed in the rearward, he accepts his post with satisfaction
Sahih al-Bukhari 2887
; this is an indication that a slave, as part of his complete servitude to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), obeys his commander and obeys his leader; he does not act independently according to his own opinion; because jihad in the cause of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) cannot bear the fruit that Islam aims for except through obedience; except by the commanded one obeying his commander, with the known condition in Islam, which is in other than disobedience to the Most Merciful (Blessed and Exalted is He).
So this slave, as part of his obedience to his Lord, is obedient to his commander and leader; if he is ordered to advance with the army to guard and watch the enemy, he is obedient, he does not lag behind, he does not complain, and he does not say: "This is not my job" or the like; and if he is ordered to be in the rear, he likewise obeys this order; he is obedient to the army commander because he knows that the establishment of the order does not happen except through this obedience;
if he is appointed in the vanguard, he is perfectly satisfied with his post of guarding, and if he is appointed in the rearward, he accepts his post with satisfaction
Sahih al-Bukhari 2887
.
This is a meaning that appeared to me from this hadith, and the commentators mentioned other meanings, among which they said:
if he is appointed in the vanguard, he is perfectly satisfied with his post of guarding
Sahih al-Bukhari 2887
means he fulfilled his duty in it; likewise, if he is in the rear guard, he also fulfilled his duty in it; in any case, he is a person who fulfills the obligation in whatever place he is placed; so it is part of his complete submission and worship of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that he is
if he is appointed in the vanguard, he is perfectly satisfied with his post of guarding, and if he is appointed in the rearward, he accepts his post with satisfaction
Sahih al-Bukhari 2887
.
And among his qualities:
if he asks for permission he is not permitted, and if he intercedes, his intercession is not accepted.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2887
; meaning in colloquial terms: no one pays attention to him, no one notices him, he has no status, he has no rank among people; so he is truly a vagrant, and the word "vagrant" is not a word of blame, but rather a word describing a person who has no reputation in society; and this reputation, you must know, is often a calamity for its owner; therefore, the righteous slave never hopes for reputation, but rather he works in what pleases Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), like this person striving in the cause of Allah whom the Messenger (peace be upon him) described with what you heard; among his qualities is also that if he asks for permission to enter upon a commander or a minister, no one gives him permission and no one pays attention to him.
And if he intercedes, his intercession is not accepted; this is as came in another hadith from his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Often a disheveled, dusty person is pushed away at the doors, if he swore by Allah, He would make his oath true
; these people, who are the poor and the weak, are those by whom Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) supports His religion, as came in the hadith in "Al-Sahih," and it is his saying (peace be upon him):
Seek out your weak ones; for you are only supported by your weak ones through their supplication and their sincerity
; this is in jihad in the cause of Allah, where victory does not come through these leaders whose pride is that shiny badges are placed on their bodies and shoulders, but rather victory comes for those soldiers who fulfill the duty of jihad and in the cause of Allah only, who fulfill this duty truly, seeking no reward or gratitude behind it, not even an elevation of rank or position, but rather they strive in the cause of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and do not seek status; therefore, among the qualities of these people is that if they ask for permission, they are not given permission, and if they intercede, they are not granted intercession.
