Explanation of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): “O My servants, you will not reach the extent of My harm so that you could harm Me, nor will you reach the extent of My benefit so that you could benefit Me.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So, the remainder of the hadith without commentary, starting from His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He) in this sacred hadith:
O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me.
Sahih Muslim 2577a
; meaning that all the servants are unable to reach the point of harming Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), and consequently, they do not harm Allah in any way. Likewise, if all the servants wished to convey their benefit to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), they would be unable to benefit Him with anything; because Allah is the origin of good and evil. How can the servants, upon whom Allah decrees what He wills of good or evil, be able to harm Allah with anything or benefit Him with anything? Far be it from Him, and (Glorified and Exalted is He) from that; for He is the Subduer over His servants.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything.
Sahih Muslim 2577a
, this phrase confirms that if all of humanity were to gather to benefit Allah with something and increase something in His dominion, they would have no way to do so. If they all gathered, from the first to the last, of the jinn and the humans, and even if they were in a single proportion of righteousness and piety, and they all worshipped Allah (Mighty and Majestic), that would not increase anything in the dominion of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He); because Allah is the One free of need from all the worlds. And conversely, if the jinn and the humans, from the first to the last, were upon the most wicked heart of a single man among you, that would not decrease anything from His dominion (Blessed and Exalted is He); because He is also the One free of need from all the worlds.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place
Sahih Muslim 2577a
, in one level place, they gathered in it from the first to the last
and asked Me فسألوني
, meaning every one of these humans whose number only Allah can count; every one of them turned to Allah with a request for Him, so Allah gave every one of them who asked what he asked for
that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it
Sahih Muslim 2577a
.
The needle is the pin.
... the head of the pin in the water in the vast sea, then he took out this pin; so what is the proportion of the small drop, the tiny speck that stuck to this pin, compared to the water of the encompassing sea? Nothing. In reality, the intention here is not to prove that if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) gave every one of His creations, from the first to the last, what they asked for, that it would decrease from His dominion. This is not the intention; rather, the matter is an approximation. For when the pin is lowered into the water and then taken out, what sticks to it is something that is not even worth mentioning at all compared to the sea. But the entire sea, compared to what is with Allah (Mighty and Majestic), what is it? Nothing, also. So this is a material, approximate example to the effect that if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) gave all of creation what they asked for, it would not decrease anything from His dominion, absolutely, ever; because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is Able to do all things. So the continuous, sustaining source, no matter how much people take from it, it does not decrease; because it is moving...
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it.
Sahih Muslim 2577a
, what is the intended purpose of this passage from this hadith?
There are two purposes: one relates to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) and one of His attributes, and the other relates to His servants.
As for the first matter: = -- and upon you be peace -- = the intention is to affirm the vastness of what is with Allah (Mighty and Majestic) of good and of His abundant grace.
And the other thing that relates to the servants is: if they know that what is with Allah of good, and what He supplies His servants with to fulfill their requests, that is what gives them hope in their Lord and encourages them to ask Him for anything that falls within the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and is not something impossible by custom.
So when a person knows this vastness of the power of Allah and of His grace, he hopes in what is with Him and asks his Lord more for anything he is in need of; whether it is from the matters of this world or from the matters of the Hereafter = -- and upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah -- = for example, it came in the authentic hadith:
If any one of you asks his Lord for something
, or as he said (peace be upon him),
let him not say, 'if You will'; for Allah is not compelled
,
If any one of you asks his Lord for something
so do not say: “O Allah, forgive me, if You will,” or “O Allah, provide for me, if You will”;
and no one can compel Allah.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3854Sahih (Darussalam)
; meaning He bestows His grace (Blessed and Exalted is He) as He is the Generous.
Therefore, it is not permissible, and it is not among the etiquette of supplication in Islam, to say: “My Lord, forgive me, if You will,” without saying “if You will.” Be decisive, as it came in some narrations of the hadith:
and let him be resolute in his request
. And let him be decisive, meaning let him cut off the matter and not condition it upon the will of Allah; because when you say “if You will,” it is as if Allah is there under compulsion and refrains from fulfilling what the person asked Him for. We know that there is no repeller of His will and no repeller of His decree. And since you know this truth and know that the grace of Allah is not decreased if all the people gathered in one place and asked Him, and He gave each one of them what he asked for, it would not decrease anything from His dominion. So proceed with your request from Allah, no matter how much it is compared to your weakness and your poverty; for it is something small and insignificant compared to the vastness of the grace of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and His great generosity.
So this encourages us to turn to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in every need we have of Him, no matter how big it is for us, it is insignificant compared to the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and His grace.
