The Shaykh : The third hadith states: And from Sa'id ibn Abi al-Hasan, who said: A man came to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I am a man who draws these images, so give me a ruling on them. He said to him: Come closer to me. So he came closer, then he said: Come closer to me. So he came closer until he placed his hand on his head, and said: I will inform you of what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Everyone who makes representations of things will go to hell, and for every representation he has made there will be produced a soul which will punish him in jahannam. كل مصوِّر في النار يُجعل له بكلِّ صورة صوَّرها نفسًا فيعذِّبه في جهنم
Mishkat al-Masabih 4498
. Ibn Abbas said: If you must do it, then make trees and things that have no breath. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
In a narration by al-Bukhari, he said: I was with Ibn Abbas when a man came to him and said: O Ibn Abbas, I am a man whose livelihood is from the craft of my hands, and I make these images? Ibn Abbas said: I will not tell you anything but what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard him say:
Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it. من صوَّر صورةً فإن الله معذّبه حتى ينفخ فيها الروح وليس بنافخٍ فيها أبدًا
Sahih al-Bukhari 2225
. The man became very angry, so he said: Woe to you, if you refuse to do anything but make them, then stick to this tree and everything that has no soul.
The author says: A person becomes angry when he swells with anger or arrogance; meaning that when that man heard what Ibn Abbas narrated of the severe warning regarding those who draw such images, like that questioner, this questioner became very angry and greatly irritated by what he heard of the severe warning, so Ibn Abbas provided him with an exit and a way out; because, as you heard, he said that his livelihood is from making those images and statues, so when he clarified to him the prohibition of that, he became very angry and irritated, so he said to him: If you must be a maker—that is, a drawer—then draw trees and everything that has no soul or breath.
From this hadith, the scholars derived the distinction between drawing animals and drawing inanimate objects; so they forbade the first and permitted the second.
