The Shaykh : The third hadith says: It was narrated from Sa'id ibn Abi al-Hasan that a man came to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: I am a man who draws these images... in it. He said to him: Come closer to me. So he came closer. Then he said: Come closer to me. So he came closer until he placed his hand on his head and said: I will inform you of what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say Mishkat al-Masabih 4498. Ibn Abbas said: If you must do it, then make trees and things that have no soul. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim. In a narration by al-Bukhari, he said: I was with Ibn Abbas when a man came to him and said "O Ibn Abbas, I am a man whose livelihood is from the craft of my hands, and I make these images". Ibn Abbas said "I will not tell you anything except what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard him say . The man became very angry. He said: Woe to you! If you refuse to do anything else, then make this tree and everything that has no spirit". The author says: "Raba" means when a person swells with anger or pride. This means that when that man heard what Ibn Abbas narrated regarding the severe warning for those who draw such images, like that questioner, this questioner became very angry and greatly irritated by the severe warning he heard. So Ibn Abbas provided him with an exit and a relief, because as you heard, he said that his livelihood is from making those images and statues. So when he clarified to him the prohibition of that, he swelled with that anger and became greatly irritated. He said to him: If you must be a maker, meaning a drawer, then draw trees and everything that has no spirit or breath. From this hadith, the scholars derived the distinction between drawing animals and drawing inanimate objects, so they forbade the first and permitted the second.
