Is it permissible for a woman to adorn herself with artificial shapes?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Does that mean that if a woman adorns herself with artificial shapes, it is forbidden?

The Shaykh : I indicated in my previous answer that it is not permissible for her to change this creation except by an explicit text, and this text is missing. So when I said "except by an explicit text," I intended to draw attention to the fact that if there is a change permitted by the Wise Lawgiver, it is permissible. For example: He who created the beard also created the armpit hair. So at the time when He commands leaving the beard, He commands plucking the armpit hair. This plucking is a change, but it is a change permitted by Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Likewise, it is said about circumcision. Allah created the man with that foreskin, yet He made circumcision one of the characteristics of the fitrah (the innate natural disposition), like plucking the armpit hair and cutting the nails. These are, in reality, changes to what Allah created, but for a command from Allah. Meanwhile, He commanded leaving the beard, which is part of Allah's creation. As for the mustache, He took a middle course; He did not command its removal as He did with the pubic hair and armpit hair, nor did He command leaving it as He did with the beard. Rather, He commanded lightening the mustache hair, cutting it, and taking from its edge and tip, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever does not take from his mustache, then he is not from us. مَن لم يأخُذْ مِن شاربه فليس منَّا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam)
. He did not say "whoever does not take his mustache," but rather he said:
Whoever does not take from his mustache مَن لم يأخُذْ مِن شاربه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So when the Shari'ah provides details regarding the position that a Muslim must take, this Muslim affirms his true Islam and his submission to the Lord by applying these details that came explicitly in the hadiths of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), without philosophy and without using personal opinion.
Once we know this, we can proceed to answer the previous question. We said: Therefore, a woman should not change anything or use any of the dyes. So we say what we said regarding the hair of the types mentioned in the previous hadith.
There is a dye for which the Wise Lawgiver has agreed for women, to the extent that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Fragrance for men is that which its scent is apparent and its color is hidden, and fragrance for women is that which its color is visible and its scent is hidden. طيبُ الرجالِ ما ظَهَرَ ريحُه وخَفِيَ لونه ، وطيبُ النِّساءِ ما ظَهَرَ لونه وخَفِيَ ريحُه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2787
. It is permissible for a woman to use the dyes that the Wise Lawgiver has permitted. It was reported in "Sunan Abu Dawud" and others from Umm Salama: "That the women in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to paint their faces with wares." Wares is a plant that dyes for yellow.
And we all know that it is the custom of women, both in the past and present, for some of them, the custom of dyeing, dyeing the hands and dyeing the legs. This is all a change to this whiteness or tan that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created, but it is a change that is permitted, indeed commanded for some of the races of people. It was reported in some hadiths that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him in Islam. And it appears from a group of hadiths that came regarding the pledge of allegiance of the women to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that this pledge was by the woman extending her hand without touching the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or him touching her hand. She would extend her hand like this, and the Messenger was on the other side, without them meeting or touching, as the Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) explicitly stated in her saying: "I never touched the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the hand of a woman." And as was indicated by the hadith of Umm Amimah bint Ruqayqah, who was among those who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the women's pledge. When she saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) pledging with the men by extending his hand and shaking their hands, she said: O Messenger of Allah, shake our hands in the pledge as you shook the hands of the men. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
But I do not shake hands with women. إني لا أصافح النساء
Sunan Ibn Majah 2874Sahih (Darussalam)
. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) practically prohibited handshaking between him and the women, and established a symbol for this handshake that is concluded between him and the women and performed and realized between him and the men by extending the hands like this.
The point is: A woman came to pledge allegiance to the Messenger (peace be upon him), so she extended her hand.
I presented this introduction so that it does not occur to the mind of any of the attendees, from the wording of the narrator of the hadith, that the woman extended her hand to shake the hand of the Messenger. Let it not occur to anyone's mind that this extension was for shaking the hand of the Messenger; for the Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) was not in the habit of shaking hands with women. So why did she extend her hand? Because this extension was in place of the handshake between him (peace be upon him) and the men. So when she extended her hand, the Messenger (peace be upon him) saw her hand not dyed with henna, and he said in disapproval:
I do not know this is a man's or a woman's hand هذه يد رجل أم يد امرأة ؟!
Sunan Abi Dawud 4166Hasan (Al-Albani)
; meaning that women must be distinguished in their external appearance that is permissible for them to show and display to men, that they differ from men in that, just as they differ in their clothing. He permitted them to reveal the face, so it is not permissible for it to be decorated and adorned. And He permitted them to show their hands, so He encouraged them to change their hands with dyeing. This is a change, but it is a change that is commanded.
In summary: The Muslim woman may use of the dyes what the Lawgiver has permitted. And I have mentioned to you a type of that, such as dyeing and lightening the face with a type of dye known at that time.
But it is not permissible, in the way of taking a dispensation in using what the Lawgiver has permitted for women of dyeing and changing the color of the face, to use that as a means to imitate the disbelieving women or the open sinners. We all know, for example, that the old fashion for women in red lipstick was that it was crimson, it was dark red previously. Then the fashion began to develop, develop, until it became the color of the natural lip. So everything that comes to us from the West, whether it relates to men or women, we imitate the Europeans in that; and especially the women. So hardly does a fashion appear but the Egyptian women and the open sinners race to bring and realize this new fashion. It was, for example, and still is to this day, painting the face with white, then following it with the cheeks with some redness. These types of dyes, considering that their source is from the lands of the disbelievers, are not permissible to use, not just for the sake of change, for the original change has been established for you by some hadiths from the Messenger (peace be upon him).
In summary: The original ruling regarding what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created the human being with, whether male or female, is that one should not change it except with a Shari'ah proof. The original ruling is prohibition; and therefore the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) affirmed this original ruling in a very serious hadith, because either he is calling for the one who changes the creation of Allah to be expelled from the mercy of Allah, or he is informing, and this is worse and more dangerous than the first, that he is actually expelled from the mercy of Allah. And that is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
May Allah curse the women who pluck their eyebrows and those who have their eyebrows plucked, and the women who tattoo and those who get tattooed لَعَنَ الله النامصات والمتنمِّصات ، والواشمات والمستوشمات
, and in another hadith:
And the women who join hair and those who have hair joined to them, and the women who file their teeth, altering the creation of Allah for beauty والواصلات والمستوصلات ، والفالجات المغيِّرات لخلق الله للحُسْن
.
The point is: The Messenger (peace be upon him) explicitly says:
May Allah curse the women who pluck their eyebrows and those who have their eyebrows plucked لعن الله النامصات والمتنمِّصات
. The namisah is the one who plucks, the beautician barber who plucks hair from others. This is the namisah, and the mutanammisah is the woman who is plucked by that namisah. Both are cursed by the explicit wording of this hadith. And the meaning of the hadith, as I introduced before it, is either that it is a curse upon this type of women, or information about their reality with Allah that they are cursed and expelled from the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
-- And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah --
From this hadith, we can derive clear and explicit evidence for answering the previous question regarding the woman who has hair growing on her chin. These hairs were grown by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in a beautiful manner, without doubt. Therefore, plucking them is not permissible, because it is altering the creation of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), except as we mentioned, with a valid Shari'ah evidence. However, no such evidence exists here; in fact, it is absent. Also, in the continuation of the hadith, after he said:
May Allah curse the women who pluck their eyebrows, the women who have their eyebrows plucked, the women who tattoo, and the women who are tattooed لَعَنَ الله النامصات والمتنمِّصات ، والواشمات والمستوشمات
, the hadith mentions this phrase, and perhaps I missed mentioning it previously:
and the women who tattoo, the ones who are tattooed. والواشمات والمستوشمات
. Tattooing is well-known to everyone; it is common in the lands of ... and especially among women and many men. The tattooer is the one who tattoos others, and the one who gets tattooed is the one who requests a tattoo on his body and skin. Also, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that both of these are cursed.
Then he added to that and said:
and the women who join hair, the ones whose hair is joined. والواصلات والمستوصلات
as in some narrations,
and the women who join hair والواصلات
. This refers to the woman whose head hair falls out, so she wants to adorn herself for her husband with borrowed hair, previously, and with a wig in the present era. It has become ... and a specific profession; these wigs are hung in various shapes, types, and sizes. So the woman chooses whatever color of hair she wishes, which the Prophet (peace be upon him) called "false," meaning a lie.
We have indeed been tested in some circles to see women, and a person is surprised by the change in this open sinner, finding her hair blonde, then seeing her a few days later with black hair, and a few days after that with brown hair, and so on. In reality, this is a practical representation by this type of person that they are not satisfied with the creation of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). For this reason, this severe warning came in his saying (peace be upon him):
May Allah curse the women who pluck their eyebrows, the women who have their eyebrows plucked, the women who tattoo, the women who are tattooed, and the women who join hair لعن الله النامصات والمتنمِّصات ، والواشمات والمستوشمات ، والواصلات
; meaning: her hair with borrowed hair from others, or with manufactured hair, as is the case today with this type of borrowed hair known as a wig.

Eid Abbasi : ... .

The Shaykh : How?

Eid Abbasi : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes.
Then, and the greatest point here is in the conclusion of this hadith, after he mentioned another type that we have not encountered in this time, but it seems it was known previously, he said:
and the women who file their teeth. والفالجات
. The "falajat" are women who have teeth created by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) like well-arranged pearls, one next to the other. But she is not pleased with that due to the deviation of her intellect and the corruption of her fitrah, so she takes a file and files between the two teeth until they separate; they become like this, and the tooth appears like a fang from the fangs of dogs. This is what pleases her, while she is not satisfied with the creation of Allah. This type was ancient, and we do not know it now, and perhaps we will not see it, if Allah wills. It is also one of the types that the Prophet (peace be upon him) cursed. What is the cause?
The ruling on these types of sins whose practitioners were cursed is explained by stating the cause of the curse, so he said in the conclusion of the hadith:
Those who change the creation of Allah for the sake of beauty. المغيِّرات لخلق الله للحُسْن
. So why do these women do these types of alteration? For beauty; meaning: in her opinion, the creation of Allah is not beautiful. So she beautifies what Allah has made ugly in His creation, may Allah protect us from that. This is the language of her state.
Those who change the creation of Allah for the sake of beauty. المغيِّرات لخلق الله للحُسْن
. Otherwise, why this alteration? If a woman or a man is created with a defect in his vision, and he undergoes an operation to see well; this is alteration, but it is not for beauty, rather it is for necessity. So the previous hadith does not include this type of alteration, just as it does not include the types in which the Lawgiver has permitted for a certain reason; especially what is of that from the fitrah, as he said:
Five things are of the fitrah (the innate natural disposition): trimming the beard, plucking the armpit hair, shaving the pubic hair, circumcision, and cutting the nails خمسٌ من الفطرة : حفُّ الشارب ، ونتف الإبط ، وحلق العانة ، والختان ، وقصُّ الأظافر
. These are five. In another hadith:
Ten things are of the fitrah عشرٌ من الفطرة
and he mentioned in it:
and letting the beard grow وإعفاء اللحية
.
Therefore, and I have accustomed you to being frank with you, we must not belittle and we must not direct our scholarly campaigns only at women, but we must direct that ... to men before women; because it is supposed that men should be as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Men are in charge of women الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ
[An-Nisa 4:34]
. So if it is not permissible for the Muslim woman to alter the creation of Allah, even in such hairs that Allah grew on her chin, then it is even more so, and even more so, and even more so, that it is not permissible for the man whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created with a beard to take his beard. And I do not say: to shave his beard, for shaving is more severe than taking; shaving is uprooting; so it is not befitting for him to take from his beard what makes him close to imitating women; so how could he shave it? Therefore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized this by saying:
Trim your mustaches, let your beards grow, and differ from the Jews and the Christians حفُّوا الشارب ، وأعفوا اللحى ، وخالفوا اليهود والنصارى
.
Perhaps with this I have answered the previous question, that it is not permissible for a woman to adorn herself with any of the dyes; the answer: in some circumstances and with some dyes it is permissible, and the other part that involves imitating disbelieving women and open sinners is not permissible.
-- And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings --
Please proceed.
