Discussion of the narration of Kathir ibn Zayd (that Ibn 'Umar used to place his right hand on his thigh, point with his finger without moving it, and say

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And he added to its text the negation of movement, okay?
The student : Yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Ibn Hibban narrated it in *Al-Thiqat*.
The student : To whom he attributed it.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : But here I specified in the biography of Ibn Abi Maryam, from the Tabi'un, through Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi, who narrated to us from Kathir ibn Zayd from Muslim ibn Abi Maryam from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar: "That he used to place his right hand on his thigh... and point with his finger without moving it, and say: 'It is a deterrent to Satan,' and say: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do it.'"
I said: And Kathir ibn Zayd is disputed regarding, and his hadith barely reaches the level of *hasan* (good) when he is unique in it, but when there is contradiction, he is not relied upon. And therefore the Hafiz Ibn Kathir, excuse me, and therefore the Hafiz said in *Al-Taqrib*: "Trustworthy but with poor memory." It appears to me that his poor memory affected his narration of this hadith in both chain and text. Then we began to explain the "Alif" (chapter), as for the chain, to the end of it, and then.
The student : Shaykh, all of this is in *Da'if al-Khams Mi'ah* (The Weak Five Hundred).

The Shaykh : Yes, yes.
The student : Yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Then "Ba" (chapter), and as for the text, he added "and he does not move it," so it is a denounced addition. This is the discussion we mentioned yesterday.
The student : Yes, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Kathir ibn Zayd's uniqueness in this, contrary to the narration of Nafi' and 'Ali ibn 'Abd al-Rahman in Muslim and others, as mentioned previously. And what confirms this is that Kathir did not establish it, for Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri said: Kathir ibn Zayd narrated to us from Nafi' who said: Ibn 'Umar used to... and he mentioned it, and pointed with his finger and followed it with his gaze, then said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It has a more severe effect on the devil than iron,” meaning the forefinger. لَهِيَ أشدُّ على الشيطان من الحديد - يعني السبابة -
Mishkat al-Masabih 917
. Ahmad and al-Bazzar narrated it, and he said: Kathir ibn Zayd is unique in it from Nafi', and there is nothing from him except this. And Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri is trustworthy and firm. It appears that Kathir, due to his poor memory, would mention this addition sometimes and not mention it other times. And that is the correct view, if Allah wills, for what was mentioned previously, and because the movement was authenticated from the hadith of Wa'il ibn Hujr to the end of it. This is page four, and the discussion ended.
The student : What Allah willed.

The Shaykh : What prompted me to ask about this hadith is that I came across it today while reviewing for my book *Sahih al-Targhib* (Authentic Encouragements), and I found the hadith in *Musnad al-Ruwayani* through the same chain of Kathir ibn Zayd, following Ibn Hibban.
The student : Yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : But briefly: Kathir ibn Zayd from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Moving the finger in prayer is a deterrent to Satan تحريك الأصبع في الصلاة مذعرة للشيطان
I noticed.
The student : Yes, my Shaykh, this is in "Musnad al-Ruwayani".

The Shaykh : Al-Ruwayani, yes.
The student : Yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : But the narrator from Kathir of this wording which includes the affirmation of movement is not to be trusted, because Muhammad ibn 'Umar, who is al-Waqidi, narrated it from Kathir, and he is abandoned (his narrations are rejected).
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : This hadith moved me anew to research this.
The student : What Allah willed! May Allah preserve you, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : May Allah keep you safe.
The student : And may our Lord grant you health and well-being.

The Shaykh : May Allah keep you safe.
The student : And precision, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And thank you.
The student : May you be safe, serve us, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : May you be safe, and peace be upon you.
The student : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
