The questioner : The questioner says: Please explain the well-known hadith in al-Bukhari:
No staying up late after the night prayer لا سَمَرَ بعد العشاء
; even if this staying up late is like playing and sports and is in the path of calling to Allah?

The Shaykh : Staying up late, as you heard, is prohibited in the hadith. This means that the principle a Muslim should adhere to and act upon is to pray early, immediately after the night prayer. This is the principle. However, if there is a benefit for the Muslims that cannot be achieved except after the night prayer, then it is permissible to stay up late to achieve this benefit; whether it is an academic benefit, a political benefit, a sports benefit, or otherwise; provided that the intention is for the sake of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). Another condition is that this matter, which we have permitted for a temporary reason, does not become a cause for missing the dawn prayer at its current time. If the one staying up late or the one who stays up late stays up after the night prayer for an Islamic benefit, he should shorten his staying up so that he combines this benefit with the benefit of preserving the performance of the dawn prayer at its time.
