A chat about the name and title "Doctorate."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We are not giving you good news, we are announcing it to you!!

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : That I have taken the title of Doctor; you have no news of this?!

The questioner : We have no news.

The Shaykh : It would be.

The questioner : ... [Everyone laughs!]

The Shaykh : So often... he has a doctorate certificate, so he is Dr. Nasir or Dr. Al-Albani. And stranger than that, this happened recently; yesterday or the day before yesterday, his brother called me—what is his name? The two Al-Albani brothers who pray in Zarqa, who? Ibn Nu'man, Ibn Sabit, do you not remember them? One is blond like this. His brother, whose name is Muhammad, called me and said: There is a letter written that came from Algeria to the University of Jordan, and it says "Dr. Muhammad Nasir al-Din Al-Albani, University of Jordan." We looked at the university, there are many Al-Albanis there, but no one named Muhammad Nasir al-Din. So I called you, what do you think? I told him: This is probably written for me; because these Algerians correspond with me a lot, and I correspond with them little, because I do not have time. So you find them always sending me letters with questions, and there is a great activity now in Algeria for the Salafi da'wah, and they are under pressure, unfortunately. The point is: I imagine—and I told this Muhammad, and this is the point—I imagine that the writer of the letter sent to that address is not related to us from long ago, but it appears he was influenced by some of those who correspond with us, and that he understood from them that we always ask so-and-so and so-and-so, and we call them on the phone and they answer us, and so on. So he assumed in his mind that this must be a doctor, and this doctor must graduate from where? From the University of Jordan. So he wrote the address: University of Jordan, so-and-so. Therefore, I am announcing to you that I have taken the title of Doctor, but we are equal to them.

Another questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : No, we are not giving you good news; because this is not good news; because this "doctorate" today is a certificate that does not bring one closer to Allah or further away at all. Rather, the truth is that the doctorate certificate prepares its holder to advance if he strives. But if he is content with the doctorate and goes to teach people the simple information he acquired before obtaining the doctorate, he will not add anything to the people at all.
Come, 'Azim, give the adhan so that we can pray.

The Shaykh : Listen now.
