Lesson on "Encouragement and Warning," Encouragement in Fear and Its Virtue, and Commentary on the Chapter Title.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Encouragement in Fear and Its Virtue.
This chapter or section was established by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding the encouragement for the Muslim to live in fear of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), being reverent toward Him. Under it, he mentions what has come from the hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to clarify this fear of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Based on the many hadiths you will hear that bear witness to this chapter, there is a decisive indication that the stronger and more complete a Muslim's Islam is, the greater his fear of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) and his reverence for Him. If we look at some of the verses that came in the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), in addition to the hadiths that will come in this chapter, we will find that they always and forever mention the pious, righteous servants of Allah in their fear of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). The closer one of them is to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and the higher his rank with Him, the more pious and reverent he is toward his Lord (Mighty and Majestic).
These are the messengers of Allah (peace and blessings be upon them), whom Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) described as conveying the messages of Allah, fearing Him, and not fearing anyone except Allah. Likewise, Allah described the scholars by saying:
Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ
[Fatir 35:28]
. It came in "Sahih al-Bukhari" from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the story of the group and others that he said:
I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you أما إني أخشاكم لله وأتقاكم لله
Sahih al-Bukhari 5063
. This is regarding humans. There is also a description from Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) of a creation He chose over many of His servants, namely the angels brought near. Our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) described them by saying:
They fear their Lord above them يَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ
[An-Nahl 16:50]
. These angels, described in the Noble Qur'an as not disobeying Allah in what He commands them and doing what they are ordered, are also described as
They fear their Lord above them يَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ
[An-Nahl 16:50]
. If the matter is thus between the angels, the messengers, and the scholars, then all of these and these and these fear Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And as I mentioned earlier, the more pious one is, the more fearful he is, as he (peace be upon him) said:
I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you أما إني أخشاكم لله وأتقاكم لله
Sahih al-Bukhari 5063
.
Therefore, it is nonsense and false, sweetened talk to report that some of the Sufis, whether women or men, used to say in their supplication to their Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He): "I did not worship You out of hope for Your Paradise or fear of Your Fire," and so on of the alleged myth. It is inconceivable for a person who knew Allah with true knowledge not to fear his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He). Rather, as we mentioned, the closer one is to Allah, the more fearful he is of Allah and the more reverent he is toward Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The only purpose of such Sufi myths is to lead people to live in a state where there is no fear of Allah in them that would lead them to His mindfulness, nor any desire for what is with Allah that would also lead them to increase in their mindfulness of Allah.
In this section, you will hear many hadiths clarifying that it is the nature of the believer to fear Allah, and that this fear is the cause of the forgiveness of his sins and his safety from the punishment of his Lord (Mighty and Majestic), even if this fear occurs in him in a moment of his life while his entire life was lived in distance from Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
