The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says: “Encouragement to Fear and Its Virtue.” The author (may Allah have mercy on him) established this chapter or section on encouraging the Muslim to live in fear of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), being reverent toward Him. He mentions beneath it what has come from the hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to clarify this fear of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Based on the many hadiths you will hear that bear witness to this chapter, there is conclusive evidence that the stronger and more complete a Muslim’s Islam is, the greater his fear of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) and his reverence for Him. When we look at some of the verses that came in the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), besides the hadiths that will come in this chapter, we find that they always and forever mention the righteous, pious servants of Allah in their fear of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And the closer one of them is to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and the higher his rank with Him, the more pious and fearful of his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) he is.
These are the messengers of Allah (peace and blessings be upon them), whom Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) described as conveying the message of Allah, fearing Him, and fearing no one but Allah. Likewise, Allah described the scholars by His saying:[Fatir 35:28] And it came in Sahih al-Bukhari from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the story of the group and others that he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 5063 This is regarding humans. And there is a description by Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) of a creation from His creation whom He chose over many of His servants, namely the angels brought near. Our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) described them by His saying: [An-Nahl 16:50] These angels, described in the Noble Qur'an as not disobeying Allah in what He commands them and doing what they are ordered, are also described as: [An-Nahl 16:50] If the matter is thus between the angels, the messengers, and the scholars, then all these, these, and these fear Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And as I mentioned earlier, the more pious one is, the more fearful he is, as he (peace be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 5063 Therefore, it is nonsense and false, sweetened talk to quote from some of the Sufis, whether they are women or men, that one of them used to say in his communion with his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He): “I do not worship You hoping for Your Paradise or fearing Your Fire...” to the end of the alleged myth. It is inconceivable for a person who knows Allah with true knowledge not to fear his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He), as we mentioned: the closer one is to Allah, the more fearful of Allah and more reverent of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) he is. What is the purpose of such Sufi myths except to lead people to live in a state where there is no fear of Allah in them that drives them to His mindfulness, nor any desire for what is with Allah that makes them hope to increase in their piety toward Allah? In this chapter, you will hear many hadiths clarifying that it is the nature of the believer to fear Allah, and that this fear is the cause of the forgiveness of his sins and his safety from the punishment of his Lord (Mighty and Majestic), even if this fear occurs in a moment of his life while his entire life was lived in distance from Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
These are the messengers of Allah (peace and blessings be upon them), whom Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) described as conveying the message of Allah, fearing Him, and fearing no one but Allah. Likewise, Allah described the scholars by His saying:
