From the lessons of "Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib," the encouragement of fear and its virtue, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said

The Shaykh : ... and they do what they are commanded, and along with that, they are also described as fearing their Lord above them. So if the matter is thus between the angels, the messengers, and the scholars, then all of these, and these, and these fear Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And as I mentioned earlier, the more pious one is, the more fearful he is; as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you أما إني أخشاكم لله وأتقاكم لله
Sahih al-Bukhari 5063
; therefore, it is nonsense and false, sweetened talk to quote from some of the Sufis, whether they are women or men, that one of them used to say in his supplication to his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He): "I did not worship You hoping for Your Paradise, nor fearing Your Fire," to the end of the alleged myth; it is inconceivable for a person who knows Allah with true knowledge not to fear his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He) as we have mentioned; the closer one is to Allah, the more fearful of Allah and the more reverent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) he is.
What is the intent of such Sufi myths except to lead people to live in a state where there is no fear of Allah in them that would lead them to His piety, nor do they have a desire for what is with Allah that would hope for them to increase in piety towards Allah. In this chapter, you will hear many hadiths explaining that it is the nature of the believer to fear Allah, and that this fear is the cause of His forgiveness of his sins and his safety from the punishment of his Lord (Mighty and Majestic); even if this fear occurs in him in a moment of his life, while his entire life was lived in distance from Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
The first hadith in this chapter is an authentic hadith, and it is his saying: From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) say:
There are seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on the day on which there is no shade except His shade سبعة يظلُّهم الله في ظلِّه يوم لا ظلَّ إلا ظلُّه
Muwatta Malik 51:14
, and he mentioned them until he said:
a man whom a beautiful woman of high rank seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying):" I fear Allah" ورجلٌ دَعَتْه امرأةٌ ذات منصبٍ وجمال فقال : إني أخاف الله
Sahih Muslim 1031a
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and it was previously presented in full.
This hadith is known for its authenticity and is extracted in "The Two Sahihs." It was previously presented with us in one or more places from the Book of Zakah; because it contains the phrase:
And a man who gave charity with his right hand and concealed it ورجلٌ تصدَّق بيمينه فأخفاها
to the end. There, the author presented this hadith in full, and now he has quoted from it this phrase with which he titles the chapter we mentioned. That is because among those seven is a man who remembered Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflowed, and a man whom a woman of high status and beauty invited, and he said: I fear Allah. And that one who remembered Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflowed, he only wept out of fear of Allah. And this man whom the beautiful woman of high status invited, when she invited him, he said: I fear Allah. So his fear of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) protected him, and the fear of that one from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) when he remembered Him and wept out of reverence for Him made each of them among those seven whom Allah shades under the shade of His Throne on a day when there is no shade except His shade.
