Clarification that the takbirs of the funeral prayer are established in the Sunnah to reach nine, and that five, six, up to nine are permissible.

The Shaykh : Do you know that it is prescribed for the takbirs of the funeral prayer to reach nine? It is not just four; that is, the prayer over the deceased has four takbirs at the minimum, otherwise five, six, up to nine are permissible. Therefore, I said: Say takbir over her nine times.

The questioner : ... What is the evidence for that, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : It is established in the Sunnah that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), when he prayed over some of the martyrs, said takbir over them nine times. This is mentioned and traced in my book "Rulings on Funerals and Their Innovations."
