Mentioning the report of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father): "Every religious innovation is misguidance, even if people see it as good."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And rightly did 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "Every religious innovation is misguidance, even if people see it as good"; for the meaning of juristic preference in religion is that the one who prefers has aligned himself with the Lord of the worlds, to whom no one has the right to legislate except what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) wills. For this reason, Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Whoever exercises juristic preference has legislated," "Whoever exercises juristic preference has legislated"; because this person who prefers does not know from where he knows that this is a good matter, when he has only used his mind and thought and has not derived it from the Book of his Lord or from the Sunnah of his Prophet. Therefore, it is obligatory for all of us to take the stance of refraining from every newly invented matter in religion, due to the authentic hadiths mentioned previously.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes.
