The Shaykh : I am now speaking about this departure, and I am citing the Sunnah as evidence, and I am speaking based on a principle I have stated and repeated, which is that Muslims do not differ on it at all: the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The people in the time of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) were in greater need of knowledge than the Muslims of our time today. Why? Because he was surrounded by disbelievers, so he would send a learned man from among them, and he would not send with him fifteen companions who knew nothing; rather, they would learn from the scholars present in each of their lands. So, as you know, I think he sent Mu'adh alone, he sent Abu Musa al-Ash'ari alone, he sent Ali, he sent Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, he sent Duhayh, and so on. We did not find that he (peace and blessings be upon him), throughout his blessed life, sent anyone other than scholars with the scholars from among the Companions. To where? To Yemen. What is in Yemen? Nothing but shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr (disbelief). So imagine that the need was present in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
