The Shaykh : Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) established another chapter.
He said: "Chapter on What Is Mentioned Regarding Treachery and Deception".
He narrated it with a chain that is good except for one narrator.
From Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer is naively noble and the stingy person is deceitfully treacherous. المؤمن غرّ كريم والفاجر خبٌ لئيم
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1964Da'if (Darussalam)
.
So, we do not have a model of evil. Then, is the Muslim a cunning, scheming, deceitful, and mean person, or is he a naive and noble one? This hadith came to give us the answer.
The believer is naive and noble المؤمن غر كريم
What does "naive and noble" mean? It may occur to some people that the word "naive" (ghar) means a simpleton or a fool who is not good at managing the affairs of his worldly life and his hereafter, and therefore he is naive. Some contemporary scholars have been involved in this meaning and have denied this hadith. The truth is that the intended meaning of the word "naive" here
The believer is naive and noble المؤمن غر كريم
is not that mean-spirited meaning. Rather, the intended meaning is that it is the nature of the Muslim to be the opposite of the wicked, mean person. The wicked, mean person is cunning; he deceives people and follows paths that are not prescribed in his dealings and in his interaction with people. As for the believer, he is naive, meaning we can express this word with another term to explain it: he is the believing man of good heart who is not good at scheming against people or scheming for people, while people scheme against him. This is what "naive" refers to regarding his worldly affairs. But regarding his religious affairs, he is among the most alert, most awake, and most intelligent of people. So, this description of being "naive" relates to his worldly affairs and his relationship with people. Because of his good opinion of people and the soundness of his inner self, he deals with people with this good intention.
And most people, as came in the second part of the hadith,
And the wicked one is cunning and mean والفاجر خب لئيم
most people today, if they are able to take from a person something of his wealth or his property by any means, they will not hold back. This is not the nature of the Muslim. This is the nature of the wicked, cunning, deceptive, and mean person. So, the believer is naive and noble, and the wicked one is cunning, meaning deceptive, and mean.
So, these are two characteristics that go together: that the believer is naive and noble in soul, generous and bountiful. As for the wicked one, he is cunning and mean. So, these are two characteristics with the believer, and two characteristics with the wicked one correspond to them. The believer is "naive," meaning good-hearted, pure in his inner self, noble, who gives wealth and is generous with it to people. This is the opposite of the wicked one, who is cunning and deceptive, trying by every means to dominate the wealth of people in what is not lawful for him. Then, he is not noble, but rather, as came in this hadith, he is mean.
In the next lesson, if Allah wills, there will be a chapter on cursing.
And with this amount, it is sufficient, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
