The Shaykh : The questioner says here, in connection with the previous discussion: It is currently well known that washing the deceased is not done in accordance with the Sunnah, walking with the funeral procession is not done in accordance with the Sunnah, and burial is likewise; so what is to be done? Should one abandon the reward or seek it while remaining silent? Please clarify this.
Answer: It is sufficient for the Muslim today to intend to act in accordance with the Sunnah when he is unable to do so except by participating in a violation of the Sunnah. It is not permissible to attend a place where there is a violation of the Sunnah, not only in one aspect, but in many aspects, with the intention of obtaining reward. We know that responding to an invitation is obligatory, and yet, if the invitee knows that there is a wrong in the place of the invitation that he is not permitted to attend, it is better for him not to attend places where his presence is not originally obligatory in order to gain reward. In this situation, it is sufficient for him to intend to revive the Sunnah when the opportunity presents itself, without falling into another violation of the Sunnah.
