Explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: (O Allah, make the provision of the family of Muhammad mere sustenance)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: Among the examples of the two preceding hadiths is his saying: And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: O Allah, make the provision of Muhammad's family sufficient just to sustain life. اللهم اجعَلْ رزقَ آل محمَّد قوتًا
Sahih Muslim 1055
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah.
Here we find the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) making du'a for the family of Muhammad; that is, for himself, his household, his wives, and his descendants. All of these are the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the linguistic sense. It is possible to expand the term "family" here from the perspective of legal terminology, so that it includes every follower of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who follows him with sincere adherence, not merely by claim or inclination, but by following him with sincere devotion. In that case, it is possible to include in his saying:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: O Allah, make the provision of Muhammad's family sufficient just to sustain life. اللهم اجعَلْ رزقَ آل محمَّد قوتًا
Sahih Muslim 1055
every Muslim on the face of the earth, whether he is of the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the linguistic sense or not.
And if we understand this, it is not hidden from any of you that the du'a of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for himself, his family, his lovers, and his followers, asking Allah to make their provision mere sustenance, is a du'a for what is best for them in their religion and their worldly life. The secret of this, as we explained somewhat in the previous lesson, is that acquiring wealth requires tremendous efforts. It requires, above all, that the seeker pursue it through the lawful, prescribed path. Then, once he has acquired it and this wealth has increased, the obligations upon him increase. New obligations become obligatory upon him from which he would have been at ease had he been provided with mere sustenance. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) chose for himself, for his family, and for his lovers what is best for them, which is the middle path in all matters, neither excess nor deficiency, but rather the sustenance of mere subsistence, as mentioned in the hadith before this one.

The Shaykh: Naqqad al-Azdi, this hadith is weak. As long as you have the book, be glad of the explanation.
