The Shaykh’s mention of the meaning of: al-’Aal.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Here we find the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicating for the family of Muhammad, meaning for himself, his household, his wives, and all his descendants. These are the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) linguistically. It is possible to expand the term al-’Aal here from the perspective of the legal language, such that it includes every follower of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who follows him with sincere adherence, not merely by claim or inclination, but by following him with sincere devotion. In that case, we can include in his statement
O Allah, make the family of Muhammad a sufficient provision. اللهم اجعل آل محمد قوتا
every Muslim on the face of the earth, whether he is from the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) linguistically or not. If we understand this, it is not hidden from any of you that the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for himself, his people, his lovers, and his followers, asking Allah to make their provision sufficient, is a supplication for what is best for them in their religion and their worldly life. The secret of this, as we explained somewhat in the previous lesson, is that acquiring wealth requires tremendous effort. It requires, above all, that the seeker pursue it through the lawful, prescribed path. Then, if he acquires it and this wealth increases, the obligations upon him increase, and new obligations become obligatory upon him from which he would have been at ease had he been granted only a sufficient provision. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) chooses for himself, for his people, and for his lovers what is best for them, which is the middle path in all matters, neither excess nor deficiency, but rather the sufficient provision, as mentioned in the hadith before this one.

The Shaykh : Yes?

The Shaykh : Regarding al-Azdi, this hadith is weak. Since you have the book, be assured of the explanation. The hadith after the previous one, which is his statement (peace be upon him)
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: O Allah, make the provision of Muhammad's family sufficient just to sustain life. اللهم اجعل رزق آل محمد قوتا
Sahih Muslim 1055
, the hadith after it is very weak.
