In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir reported: I set out with the delegation of Banu Amir to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we said: You are our master. He said (peace be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 4806. We said: And we are the most distinguished of us in virtue and the greatest in stature. He said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4806. Abu Dawud narrated it with a good chain.
What did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) intend by his saying:Sunan Abi Dawud 4806? The Messenger (peace be upon him) meant by his saying: Sunan Abi Dawud 4806, that is, when they said to the Messenger (peace be upon him): You are our master; he said to them (peace and blessings be upon him): ; meaning that the true Master is Allah. And when they said to him: You are the most distinguished of us and the greatest of us in stature, or the most distinguished of us in virtue; he said to them (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 4806, meaning: Do not open for yourselves the door of deviation from the straight path by exaggerating in praising the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and magnifying him, so that Satan drags you to the paths that deviate from the straight path, as he said (peace and blessings be upon him): Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah 329.
Likewise, the Messenger (peace be upon him) points by his saying: to the hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he drew a straight line on the ground, then drew short lines around it, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited while extending his finger along the straight line: وَأَنَّ هَذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَلا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way[Al-An'am 6:153]. So, exaggerating in praising the prophets and the righteous is among the paths by which Satan drags those who exaggerate in praise to the short paths and takes them out of the straight path, which is a single path with no second; this is the intended meaning of his saying (peace be upon him): ولا يستجرينَّكم الشيطان and let not Satan drag you away. And in terms of usul (principles of jurisprudence): The Messenger (peace be upon him), with this phrase, by his saying: لا يستجرينَّكم الشيطان let not Satan drag you away, established the principle of sadd al-dhara'i' (blocking the means to harm); he forbids exaggerating in praise for fear that it leads to impermissible speech, as the Christians did.
Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir reported: I set out with the delegation of Banu Amir to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we said: You are our master. He said (peace be upon him):
The lord is Allah, the Blessed and Exalted
Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the devil make you his agents.
What did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) intend by his saying:
Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the devil make you his agents.
Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the devil make you his agents.
The Master is Allah
Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the devil make you his agents.
Do not extol me as the Christians extolled [Jesus] the son of Mary. I am merely a servant,’ so say: '[He is] Allah’s servant and His Messenger.’
Likewise, the Messenger (peace be upon him) points by his saying:
and let not Satan drag you away
