The Best Method for Memorizing the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: The questioner says: I read a hadith in one of the magazines about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressing 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) when he complained to him that the Qur'an was slipping from his chest,So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
O Abu al-Hasan, shall I not teach you words by which Allah will benefit you, and by which He will benefit whoever you teach, and by which what you have learned will be established in your chest? So 'Ali said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When it is Friday night, if you are able to stand in the last third of the night, then it is a well-known hour, and supplication in it is answered. If you are not able, then stand in the middle of it. If you are not able, then stand in the first part of it. Pray four rak'ahs, reciting in the first rak'ah al-Fatihah and Surah Ya-Sin, and in the second rak'ah al-Fatihah and Surah Ha-Mim al-Dukhan, and in the third rak'ah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Sajdah, and in the fourth rak'ah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Mulk. When you have finished the tashahhud, praise Allah and make good mention of Him, and send blessings upon me and upon the other prophets, and seek forgiveness for the believing men and women and for your brothers who preceded you in faith. Then say at the end of that: O Allah, have mercy on me and grant me good insight into what pleases You regarding me. O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor and the Might that cannot be matched, I ask You, O Merciful, by Your Majesty and the light of Your Face, to bind my heart to the preservation of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me to recite it in the manner that pleases You. O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor and the Might that cannot be matched, I ask You, O Allah, O Merciful, by the light of Your Face, to illuminate my chest with Your Book, and to set free my tongue with it, and to expand my chest with it, and to relieve my heart with it, and to make my body act upon it, for none helps me in truth except You, and none guides me except You, and there is no power and no strength except by Allah.

The Most High, the Magnificent... O Abu al-Hasan, do that three Fridays, or five, or seven, and it will be established by the permission of Allah. And by Him who sent me with the truth, a believer has never erred.
, so what is the authenticity of this hadith? If it is authentic, when is this prayer performed on Friday? Is it permissible to carry the mushaf in prayer and read from it while looking at it, if the one praying does not have it memorized? Also, regarding supplication, is it permissible to write it on a piece of paper and read it from the paper during prayer? What is the best time for supplication in prayer? And if this hadith is not authentic, is there a correct and beneficial method for memorizing the Qur'an and being safe from it being lost from the chest?

Answer: First: As for the hadith you mentioned, Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it in his Jami', in the Book of Supplications,And he said: This is a good, strange hadith; we do not know it except from the hadith of al-Walid ibn Muslim,Until Ibn Kathir said: It is extremely strange, indeed, it is denounced, and Allah knows best.

And Shaykh Muhammad Rashid Rida commented on it by saying: Rather, its style is the style of fabricated narrations, not the style of the most eloquent of people, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), nor the style of their era.

So he must: I do not think you should act upon this hadith given what has been said about it. As for the action that establishes the memorization of the Qur'an in your chest, you must increase in its recitation and its review; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised reviewing this Qur'an,And he said:
it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbledإنه أشد تفلتًا من الإبل في عقلها
Sahih Muslim 791
, so you must increase in its recitation and repetition,
until it is established in your chest, whether in prayer or outside of prayer,So there is no means to memorize the Qur'an except by two things:

First: frequent recitation.

And secondly: Acting upon the Qur'an, for acting upon the Qur'an leads to its establishment in the heart and its remembrance. This is what I advise you to do.
As for writing supplications on a piece of paper and reading them from the paper and praying, I do not think you should do that. You must supplicate with what is easy for you and what you have memorized, and do not strain yourself with writing and reading; because this distracts you from the prayer.
And reading from the mushaf, if a person does not memorize anything of the Qur'an, there is no harm in it. Some of the Salaf permitted it, and it is the position of a group of scholars, if one is unable to read from memory and does not memorize anything of the Qur'an, or if one wants to pray at night, for example, and perform tahajjud and wants to increase in recitation, there is no harm. Likewise, in the tarawih prayer, if one does not memorize the Qur'an, there is no harm in reading from the mushaf out of necessity.
