Hanging Qur'anic Verses

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible to hang decorative plaques in homes that have Qur'anic verses written on them?

Answer: Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) revealed the Qur'an as guidance, light, and a healing for what is in the chests. He revealed it to be recited, reflected upon, acted upon, and to be guided by its guidance, and to be taken as a leader and guide to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and to His Paradise. It is the proof of Allah over His creation. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
the Qur'an is proof, either for you or against youالقرآن حجة لك أو عليك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2437Sahih (Darussalam)
If you hold fast to it and act upon it, it becomes a proof for you and your guide to Paradise. If you turn away from it, it becomes a proof against you, driving you to the Fire due to your contradiction of it and failure to act upon it. This is the obligatory duty toward the Qur'an.
The obligatory duty toward the Qur'an is that we recite it with its proper recitation, that we follow its guidance and be illuminated by its light, and that we honor it, revere it, respect it, and protect it from play and desecration; because it is the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), which is
Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.لَا يَأْتِيهِ الْبَاطِلُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلَا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ حَكِيمٍ حَمِيدٍ
[Fussilat: 42], and that we act upon it, and that we judge by it in matters where we disagree. As Allah the Exalted said:
And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
[An-Nisa: 59].
As for writing it on curtains or scraps of paper and hanging them on walls, this is not recommended. Or writing it as curtains and amulets and hanging them on children, or on necks, or on women or men; this is not permissible according to the correct opinion of the scholars; because it involves desecrating the Qur'an and exposing it to humiliation. It may also lead to the belief in healing from other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and it opens the door to hanging what is not permissible to hang, such as Satanic charms and phrases of shirk (associating partners with Allah).
The correct opinion of the scholars is that it is not permissible to take the Qur'an as amulets and charms that are written and hung on necks or bodies.
Likewise, writing it on plaques and hanging them on walls is not recommended; because the Qur'an may be humiliated. Perhaps the place where this plaque containing a verse from the Book of Allah is hung will contain some sins, some open sinfulness, and this would be a humiliation of the Great Qur'an. Perhaps this plaque will fall and be trampled, and desecrated, or this plaque will end up with residents who do not care about the Qur'an, and they will move into this house and humiliate this hanging Qur'an. So, hanging it on walls exposes it to desecration. This was not the way of the righteous Salaf (the earliest generations); it is not known
that they used to write the Qur'an on plaques and frames and hang them on walls. Rather, the Qur'an was in their hearts, and they acted upon it openly and secretly, and it was memorized, recited, and studied. As for writing it on plaques and frames and the like, this was not known from the Salaf, and there is no benefit behind it. Rather, there is fear of harm and humiliation to the Great Qur'an.
