Ruling on writing the Qur'an on curtains or on panels

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q102: The questioner asks: Is it permissible to hang decorative panels in homes that have verses from the Qur'an written on them?
A102: Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, revealed the Qur'an as guidance and light, and as a healing for what is in the breasts. He revealed it to be recited, to be reflected upon, to be acted upon, to be illuminated by its guidance, and to be taken as a leader and guide to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and to His Paradise. It is the argument of Allah against His creation, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Ghanm that Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari told him that the Messenger of Allah said: "Isbagh Al-Wudu is half of faith; Alhamdu lillah (praise be to Allah) fills the balance; the Tasbih and the Takbir fill the heavens and Earth; the Salah is light; the Zakah is a sign (of sincerity); patience is an illuminating torch; and the Qur'an is proof, either for you or against you."الطُهور شطر الإيمان... والقرآن حجة لك أو عليك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2437Sahih (Darussalam)
If you hold fast to it and act upon it, it will be an argument for you, and it will be your guide to Paradise. But if you turn away from it, it will be an argument against you, driving you to the Fire by your contradiction of it after knowing it. This is what is obligatory regarding the Qur'an: that we recite it with its due recitation, that we follow its guidance, that we be illuminated by its light, that we honor it, revere it, respect it, and protect it from play and desecration.
Because it is the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The Exalted said:
Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.لاَ يَأْتِيهِ الْبَاطِلُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلاَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ حَكِيمٍ حَمِيدٍ
[Fussilat 41:42]
. And we must act upon it and judge by it in what we differ over, as the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
[An-Nisa 4:59]
. As for writing it on curtains, patches, or on panels, and hanging it on walls; this is not appropriate. It is forbidden to write it on curtains and amulets that are hung on children, or on necks, or on women, or on men. This is not correct according to the words of the scholars, because it involves desecration and exposure to insult. It may also lead to the belief in healing from other than Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and it opens the door to hanging what is not permissible to hang, such as Satanic incantations and phrases of shirk (associating partners with Allah). The correct opinion among the scholars is that it
is not permissible to take the Qur'an as amulets and incantations, to be written and hung on necks or on bodies. Likewise, writing it on panels and hanging it on walls; this is not appropriate, because the Qur'an may be insulted, or the place where this panel with verses from the Qur'an written on it is hung may contain some sins or open sinfulness, in which case this would be an insult to the Great Qur'an. Perhaps the panel may fall, be trampled, and be desecrated, or this panel may end up with residents who do not care about the Qur'an, who move into this house and insult this hanging Qur'an. So hanging it on walls exposes it to desecration. This was not the way of the righteous Salaf; it is not known that they used to write the Qur'an on panels or in frames and hang them on walls. Rather, the Qur'an was preserved in the hearts, acted upon outwardly and inwardly, memorized, recited, and taught. As for writing it on panels, frames, and the like, this was not known from the Salaf, and there is no benefit behind it, but rather harm and insult to the Great Qur'an is feared.
