Ruling on Giving Zakah to Those Whom One Is Obligated to Support

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A man has a son, or a mother, or a sister—among those whom he is obligated to support—and he wants to give them his zakah. And you said: It is not valid to give zakah to one whom you are obligated to support. So, who is it that a person is obligated to support?
It is not permissible for anyone to give his zakah to those he is obligated to support for the purpose of their maintenance. However, if it is to pay off a debt, there is no harm. For example, if your father has a debt and you want to pay it off from your zakah, and he is unable to pay it himself, there is no blame on you. The same applies to the mother, and the same applies to the son. But if you give him from your zakah for the purpose of maintenance, that is not permissible; because by doing so, you are preserving your wealth. And maintenance is obligatory for the parents: The mother and the father,And for the children: The son and the daughter; and everyone whom you would inherit if they died,Meaning: Everyone whom you would inherit if they died, you are obligated to support;because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And upon the [father's] heir is [a duty] like that [of the father].وَعَلَى الْوَارِثِ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ
[al-Baqarah: 233] So Allah obligated the heir to pay the fee for breastfeeding; because breastfeeding is in the position of maintenance.
