The Difference Between Financial Maintenance and Zakah for Maintaining Family Ties

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Because a father is not obligated, he is not required to pay off his son's debt, and a son is not required to pay off his father's debt. For this reason, it is permissible for a son to pay off his father's debt from his zakah, and it is permissible for a father to pay off his son's debt from his zakah. This is because neither of them is obligated to pay the other's debt. This is unlike financial maintenance (nafaqah); it is not permissible to give zakah to a person who needs maintenance that is your responsibility. It is not permissible to give him from your zakah because by giving him, you are saving your own money. We say: provide for him from your lawful wealth. These are matters that a person should reflect upon. Therefore, the people of zakah are those to whom it is distributed, and distributing it to others is not permissible.
Let us look at the time now so we do not keep you up too late. It is not eleven thirty. This is a long time. We will postpone the questions, my brother. What is your name?
The student: Adnan.

The Shaykh : My brother Adnan, until the morning after the Fajr prayer, but I condition you to attend and not have your head on your chest from drowsiness. If you commit to this, I will come. But if the people present with me are all dozing with their heads on their chests, I will not come. Are you ready, if Allah wills?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : No drowsiness or anything.
The student: If Allah wills.

The Shaykh : If Allah wills (Glorified and Exalted is He). We and you, if Allah wills (Glorified and Exalted is He), until the morning, and the brother will take care of it, if Allah wills (Glorified and Exalted is He).
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Ah
The student: Shaykh, regarding the insane person, oh Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Wait, wait.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Where is the owner?
