Allah the Exalted said:

So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].

فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا

[Surat al-Shams: 14] (destroyed them) means: He overwhelmed them and destroyed them,As when one says: as when one says, "I filled in the well," meaning I covered it with earth. (So their Lord destroyed them for their sin) means: because of their sins, for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) does not wrong people in any way, but it is people themselves who wrong themselves. Therefore, sins are the cause of destruction, devastation, and corruption, as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

[Surat al-Rum: 41] ,And Allah the Exalted said:

And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.

وَإِذَا أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نُهْلِكَ قَرْيَةً أَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُوا فِيهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهَا الْقَوْلُ فَدَمَّرْنَاهَا تَدْمِيراً

[Surat al-Isra: 16] , And Allah the Exalted said, addressing the noblest of creation and the best of generations:

Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.

أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ مِثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّى هَذَا قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

[Surat Ali 'Imran: 165] So a person is afflicted with calamities from his own self,And for this he said: (So their Lord destroyed them for their sin) means: because of their sin. (And leveled them) means: He encompassed them with destruction until none of them remained, and they became prostrate in their homes.
