What is forbidden to wear in the state of ihram
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
And among the prohibitions in the state of ihram is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specified when he was asked what a person in ihram should wear,He said: (He does not wear a shirt, nor a turban, nor trousers, nor a hooded cloak, nor leather socks). There are five things a person in ihram does not wear: the shirt, which is the garment called the dir' (tunic), similar to the clothes we wear today.
And the turban: And the turban, which is wrapped around the head, and the like of it is the ghutrah (headscarf) and the taqiyah (cap). Indeed, it is established in the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the story of the man whose mount gored him while he was standing at 'Arafah, and he died (may Allah be pleased with him),The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Wash him with water and sidr, and shroud him in his two garments, and do not cover his head, and do not apply perfumed ointment to him, for he will come on the Day of Resurrection while reciting the talbiyah).
And the meaning of (do not cover his head) is: do not cover it,And pay attention to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): (and shroud him in his two garments). So if a person in ihram dies, we do not go to the market and bring a cloth to shroud him in; rather, we shroud him in the ihram garments he died wearing. It is well known that a person not in ihram is wrapped in three wrappings when he dies, but the person in ihram is shrouded in his izar (lower garment) and rida' (upper garment), and his head is not covered; because he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection while reciting the talbiyah,Meaning: rising from his grave saying: Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik (Here I am, O Allah, here I am).
And its equivalent in jihad: The man who is martyred and dies is buried in his clothes, and he is raised on the Day of Resurrection with his wound oozing blood -Meaning: flowing -The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (the color is the color of blood, and the smell is the smell of musk).
And trousers: This is well known.
And the hooded cloak: Loose garments that have a part connected to them that covers the head. I think some of you have seen this type of clothing, and most of those who wear it are the people of the Maghreb.
And leather socks: That is: (the kandur). Likewise, socks are similar, and a person in ihram does not wear them.
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Whoever does not find an izar, let him wear trousers, and whoever does not find sandals, let him wear leather socks). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted a dispensation to the one who does not find an izar to wear trousers, and to the one who does not find sandals to wear leather socks.
If a person were to wear a vest that has no stitching, being entirely woven, that is also forbidden; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited trousers, which cover the lower part of the body. Likewise, the vest is forbidden because it covers the upper part of the body. However, if he wears an izar that is patched and stitched, it is not forbidden. Likewise, if he wears stitched sandals, it is not forbidden either.
Therefore: I want to remove from your minds the idea of some people who think that anything with stitching is forbidden. This is not correct. What is forbidden is what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. You now know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited five things in clothing. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) never explicitly mentioned stitched garments.
And for this reason we say: If we had expressed it as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed it, it would have been better;Because if we say: It is forbidden for a person in ihram to wear stitched garments. Some people misunderstood its meaning, and for this reason, people often ask when one of them wears a stitched izar: Is it forbidden? We say: It is not forbidden. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) specified five things, so nothing other than these five is forbidden, except what is in their meaning. So if a person wears a wristwatch, that is not forbidden for him;Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (He does not wear), and he listed the things that are not worn. What is other than that is worn. If a man were to wrap himself in a shirt,Meaning: making it a wrap around his chest, that is permissible and not forbidden; because he was not prohibited from wearing it.
Therefore: It is forbidden for a person in ihram to wear these categories of clothing, and what is in their meaning is like them. So if a person were to wear something like that on his shoulders, we would say: This is forbidden; because it resembles the hooded cloak, for example, or is very close to the hooded cloak, so it would be forbidden. But if he made it a wrap that he wraps around himself, making its top its bottom, and making it like a rida' (upper garment), it would be permissible. The prohibition of these five things is specific to men.
And the turban: And the turban, which is wrapped around the head, and the like of it is the ghutrah (headscarf) and the taqiyah (cap).
