Supplicating against one from whom you fear harm and injury
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
There are people we meet frequently who display harm and injury. When we see them, our thoughts are associated with evil. Is it permissible for us to supplicate against them, or to ask Allah to protect us from their evil? Is this considered taking an omen?
If there are indications that this person intends you harm,There is no harm in saying this, indeed there is no harm in supplicating and saying: “O Allah, We place You against their throats, and we seek refuge in You from their evils.”
And take your precautions against them.
As for mere suspicion, it is better to have a good opinion of the Muslim. This is the default, unless strong indications exist that shift this default to a bad opinion. However, it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “Souls are like armies in formation; those that recognize each other unite, and those that do not recognize each other differ.” This is something a person finds within himself. You meet a person in the market whom you have not known or seen before, and you find yourself inclined toward him, and he is likewise inclined toward you. This is because souls harmonize and recognize each other, and this is a hidden matter about which we have no knowledge.
You may meet some people you have never seen or gathered with before, and you find yourself repelled by them, just as it is the case for them. This is an experienced and real phenomenon. However, the default for a Muslim is safety. If you find indications that he intends harm, whether from his looks, his movements, or the like, take your precautions against him.And supplicate to Allah the Exalted with what you have heard: “O Allah, I place You against his throat, and I seek refuge in You from his evil.”
