The ruling on a woman exposing part of her body in front of women
Is it permissible for a woman to expose part of her chest, or what is called the ribs, or her arms, or part of her legs in front of women?
As for the arms, there is nothing wrong with showing them in front of women. As for the neck, there is also nothing wrong with showing it in front of women, and the same applies to the head. However, we advise our women with an advice by which we hope that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) will make it beneficial. We say: The more modest and covering the clothing is, the more beneficial it is for them. We forbid them from following what is in these magazines and making what is displayed in them; because this leads a woman to imitate the disbelieving women, whether she is pleased with it or not. And the more modest the women are, the better it is.
And the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that the women of the Companions used to wear tunics—Meaning: shirts—that covered from the wrist to the ankle, from the wrist of the hand to the ankle of the foot, and this is the best.
And there is nothing wrong with showing the leg, but we do not say that she should wear a garment that reaches the knee; because this is feared; because women gradually raise their garments until they lift them above that. But if a woman—for example—lifts her garment to do one of the tasks and her sister sees her, then there is nothing wrong with that. As for the garment being tailored to the knee, we do not see that; rather, we see that it should be to the ankle.
