What is meant by the hadith of the seventy thousand who enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment?
This is a long, well-known hadith. It states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a great darkness that filled the horizon, and he was told: “This is your Ummah, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment.” So the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) began to ask one another who these people were.So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (They are those who do not seek ruqyah, do not practice cauterization, do not take omens, and they place their trust in their Lord),His statement: They do not seek ruqyah,Meaning: meaning they do not ask anyone to recite over them for an illness they have, and they do not practice cauterization,Meaning: meaning they do not ask anyone to cauterize them, and they do not take omens,Meaning: meaning they do not consider things unlucky, and they place their trust in their Lord,Meaning: relying on Him completely.
And knowledge from his saying: By “they do not seek ruqyah,” it is meant that if they were to recite over others, there is no harm, and they would not be deprived of this great reward. Also, if someone else recited over them without their request, there is no harm, and they would not be deprived of this great reward. Likewise, if someone else cauterized them without their request, they would not be deprived of this reward.
As for taking omens, it is considering things unlucky,The scholars said: and considering things unlucky can be based on something seen, heard, or known,And considering things unlucky based on something seen: such as seeing something that causes one to feel unlucky,As if he sees a black bird and says: like seeing a black bird, or seeing a person in front of him stumble and die, so he considers it unlucky and says: “If I go down this road, something like what happened to this person will happen to me,” or something similar,And considering things unlucky based on something heard: or hearing an offensive word, so he considers it unlucky and turns back from his need.
And considering things unlucky based on something known: Considering days or months unlucky, as the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to do. Some considered the month of Safar unlucky, some considered the month of Shawwal unlucky, some considered Wednesday unlucky, and other things known from the ways of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Indeed, taking omens is shirk (associating partners with Allah), as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Taking omens is shirk, taking omens is shirk). A person must place his trust in Allah and rely on Him in all his affairs. If he sees that it is good to do something, let him do it, and let him not be concerned by what he hears or sees; because taking omens is shirk.
And as for reliance, it is: True reliance on Allah in bringing benefits and repelling harms, while performing the beneficial causes; because reliance without performing the beneficial causes is called tawakkul (false reliance) and not tawakkul (true reliance). Indeed, the master of those who place their trust is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and yet he performed the causes that protected him,So in the Battle of Uhud, he was visibly between two coats of armor, meaning: wearing two coats of armor out of fear of arrows, digging the trench around Madinah so that the enemy would not enter it, and hiding in the cave of Thawr for three days so that the enemy would not catch him. So performing the beneficial causes never contradicts reliance on Allah; rather, it is a requirement of reliance.
So these four descriptions are that they: (They do not seek ruqyah, do not practice cauterization, do not take omens, and they place their trust in their Lord), these are among the characteristics of those who enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. But let it be known that they must have faith. If we suppose that someone possesses these characteristics but does not pray, he will never enter Paradise, neither with reckoning nor without reckoning; because one who does not pray is a disbeliever, and it does not benefit him that he does not seek ruqyah, does not practice cauterization, does not take omens, and that he places his trust in and relies on Allah. We must pay attention to this issue.
