Ruling on people standing up for a man when he enters the gathering
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! If a man enters the gathering and people stand up to greet him, whether he is arriving from a journey or coming from the same town, what is the ruling on this greeting?
There is no harm in a person standing up for someone to greet him, or to congratulate him on a newborn, or something similar. Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up when Ka'b ibn Malik approached and entered the mosque while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was speaking to his Companions. Talhah stood up to congratulate him on Allah's acceptance of his repentance. He said: (So I did not forget it for Talhah), so there is no harm in this.
And for this reason, the scholars say in this chapter: There are three categories of standing up: standing up for a person, standing up to a person, and standing up over a person.
So standing up for a person: It is permissible; but it is better to leave it, unless people are accustomed to considering not standing up as an insult to the one entering, in which case let him stand up for him.
And standing up to a person: It is permissible, and indeed it becomes required if the person is worthy of it.
And standing up over a person: This is prohibited, to the extent that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) one day prayed with his Companions while sitting, and they prayed standing; because they were able to, so he gestured to them to sit down.
And he indicated that this is prohibited; because it is the practice of non-Arabs with their kings; unless there is a benefit for Islam, then stand up, or if there is fear for the one you are standing over, then stand up.
An example of the benefit: Do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him, and upon his family and companions), when he went to Makkah for 'Umrah, the polytheists prevented him, and there were communications between him and them, and al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing over his head with a sword,And the Messenger did not say to him: Do not stand up! Why? For the benefit, which is to annoy the polytheists.
And for this reason, on that day, when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke, they would be silent, and when he would spit, they would catch it with their hands, then rub it on their faces and chests, even though this was not their custom; but they did it to annoy the polytheists.
And for this reason, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man walking with arrogance between the rows of the Muslims and the disbelievers,He said: (It is a gait that Allah hates, except in this place), so the gait of arrogance and swaggering is forbidden; but if it is to annoy the polytheists, there is no harm.
So be aware of these three categories, and she: standing up for a person, standing up to a person, and standing up over a person.
