The Difference Between Standing for a Man and Standing Toward a Man, and the Ruling Thereon

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And among the benefits of this story is that there is no harm in standing toward a man to shake his hand and congratulate him on what brings him joy.
Standing toward a man is permissible; the Sunnah has come with it. As for standing for a man while you remain in your place and do not move toward him, this is also permissible if people have become accustomed to it, because there is no prohibition against it. The prohibition and warning are for the one for whom people stand, not for the one who stands. As for the one for whom people stand, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding him:
Let him who likes people to stand up before him prepare his place in Hell. مَن أحب أن يتمثل الناس له قياما فليتبوأ مقعده من النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 5229Sahih (Al-Albani)
. The scholars said: Standing is of three categories: "Standing toward a man, standing for a man, and standing over a man". Three things, three categories. Standing toward a man is permissible, and the Sunnah has come with it as a command, an approval, and an action.
