The Mahr is the Right of the Wife
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A man contracted marriage with a woman, and when they were before the official marriage officer, the officer said: What is the amount of the mahr? The wife's guardian remained silent,And the husband's father spoke and said: saying, "It is such an amount of gold and such an amount of money." So, after a period of time, is it permissible for the two parties to agree to change the value of the mahr stated in the contract, or are they bound by what is in the contract?
The mahr is between the husband and the wife. If they specify something in the contract and then agree afterwards on a higher or lower amount, the matter is up to them.Meaning: For example, if the wife says, "I do not want more than half of the mahr; that is sufficient for me."
There is nothing wrong with it.
And I will tell you a story that happened in our land a long time ago: A man married a woman with a mahr of one riyal and gave the woman the mahr. On the day of consummation, he was sleeping with his wife when a man knocked on the door forcefully. The husband went down to speak with this man, and the conversation between them became heated and their voices were raised. The wife came down and listened, and she heard him demanding a riyal from her husband. She returned, and then the gathering between the husband and the man dispersed, and she said: What does this man who broke the door and raised his voice with you want? What does he want?He said: He is demanding a riyal from me from a few months ago, or something like that. And I said to him: May Allah make it easy. She said: I will pay back the riyal that I gave you. So he took it and he paid it off. Is this permissible or not permissible? It is permissible; because it is the right of the wife, and if it belongs to the wife, she is free to do with it as she wishes.
And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and all his Companions.
