The Ruling on Supplication After the Imam's Takbir
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
His Eminence the Shaykh: Is there a prescribed supplication after the imam's takbir, the takbir of ihram; because I see some people making supplication after the imam's takbir, and perhaps they supplicate with the words of Allah the Exalted: [Ibrahim: 40] Is this supplication permissible?
Supplication after the takbir of ihram by the imam is not prescribed. Rather, the sunnah (recommended practice) is that when the imam says takbir, you should hasten and say takbir so that you catch the virtue of the takbir of ihram. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: (When he says takbir, you say takbir) The particle "fa" (when/so) indicates sequence and immediate following.Meaning: From the moment he says takbir and his voice ends with the "ra" in his saying: (Allahu Akbar) you say takbir, and you do not occupy yourself with supplication, or with using the miswak, or with speaking to the person next to you, for this will cause you to miss the virtue of the takbir of ihram. And as for supplicating with his saying: (My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [make] from my descendants) This is from the supplication of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and it is not a condition [of the prayer]. However, if he supplicates with it, there is no harm in it, as long as he does not miss the virtue of the takbir of ihram.
My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants
