Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (Perhaps you will become mindful of Allah)]
Allah (Mighty and Majestic) explained the wisdom behind the obligation of fasting, saying: [al-Baqarah:183] He did not say: "Perhaps you will become hungry, or thirsty, or it will be difficult for you to abstain from your spouses,"Rather He said: [al-Baqarah: 183] This is the wisdom behind the obligation of fasting,And for this reason it came in the hadith: (Many a fasting person’s share from his fasting is only hunger and thirst) So what is taqwa? Taqwa is taking precautions against the punishment of Allah, and there is no precaution against the punishment of Allah except by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
And for this reason we say: Taqwa is doing what Allah has commanded and leaving what He has forbidden, and this is the most comprehensive definition of taqwa.
And the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explained some of this by saying: (Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it and ignorance, Allah has no need of his abandoning his food and drink) So the one who does not abandon these things, Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, does not want him to abandon food and drink; because this may involve tormenting the self, and Allah the Exalted says: [al-Nisa: 147] So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, wants us to abandon false speech, acting upon it, and ignorance, and this is the wisdom of fasting. So let a person look into himself: has he fulfilled this wisdom and this noble goal, or is his fasting only abstaining from eating, drinking, and intercourse?
