A word by the Shaykh regarding the interpretation of the first verse of Surat al-Talaq: "O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them at their waiting period..."
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for Surat al-Talaq, listen to it and pay attention to it. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: [At-Talaq 65:1] Divorce them at their waiting period. The lam here is either for the cause or for the timing. It is like His saying: It is either for the cause, because the setting of the sun is the reason for the obligation, or for the timing, because the time for the midday prayer only enters when the sun has passed its zenith. The meaning of the noble verse is: when you divorce women, divorce them at the beginning of their waiting period. When is the divorce at the waiting period?
When the woman is pregnant, or pure from intercourse, pay attention: when she is pregnant, or pure from intercourse, or a young girl who does not menstruate, or an old woman who has stopped menstruating. The young girl who does not menstruate is divorced, and likewise the old woman who has stopped menstruating, because the waiting period is prescribed for her from the time of divorce. So the divorce at the waiting period is for the pregnant woman, the woman who has stopped menstruating, the young girl who does not menstruate, and the woman who is pure from intercourse.
O Prophet, when you [Muslims] divorce women, divorce them for [the commencement of] their waiting period
