Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (They are nothing but names which you and your fathers have named.)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (They are nothing but names which you and your fathers have named)
Then Allah the Exalted reiterated the explanation of the reality of these idols that are worshipped,So he said:
They are not but [mere] names you have namedإِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا
[Al-Najm: 23] .
(In) here is a negation, meaning: what,And this is a rule that the student of knowledge benefits from: that when (illa) affirming comes after (in), then (in) here becomes a negation,For example: such as: This is nothing but a human being, this is nothing but a jurist, and the like of that.
So (in) here is a negation,Meaning: they are nothing but names which you have named,Meaning: these idols are nothing but mere names with no reality, names which they called a god and a worshipped entity, but there is no reality to that; they are nothing but mere names. Does the name indicate its named entity? No.
If you named iron wood, it would not become wood, and if you named wood iron, it would not become iron, and if you named a mule a donkey, it would not be a donkey.
And so, these idols they call gods; will they become a god? No.
They are nothing but a mere name, and a name without a named entity is of no benefit,And for this he said:
They are only.إِنْ هِيَ
meaning: these idols and named entities
except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authorityإِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ
[Yusuf 12:40]
you, the ones addressed, who lived in the time of the message and the Qur'an, ((and your fathers)) meaning: the preceding ancestors. These idols are nothing but a mere name
for which Allah has sent down no authorityمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ
[Yusuf 12:40]
(ma) is a negation, meaning: that Allah the Exalted did not send down any evidence for them. And the evidence is called authority (sultan); because the one who has evidence has with him an authority by which he rises above his opponent, and the one who has no evidence has no authority,So authority (sultan) always comes to mean the argument, i.e.: the evidence; because the one who has the evidence is one who has authority over his opponent.
for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumptionمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ
[An-Najm 53:23]
What do you say about (in) ? (In they follow) is a negation meaning: (what) based on the rule I mentioned to you, that when (illa) affirming comes after (in), then (in) becomes a negation. (In they follow) meaning: these people and their fathers (nothing but conjecture) meaning: the illusion that has no reality;Because they say: these are gods, on what did they rely? On illusion, so (zann) here means illusion,Meaning: what these people follow in their claim that they are gods (is nothing but conjecture) meaning: the illusion and imagination that has no reality,
except assumption and what [their] souls desireإِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى الْأَنْفُسُ
[Al-Najm: 23] meaning: and what their souls incline to of falsehood.

Then He, the Exalted, said:
and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ الْهُدَى
[Al-Najm: 23] The sentence here is affirmed by three affirmers: the omitted oath, the lam, and qad, and this expression is frequent in the Noble Qur'an,And it is an affirmation by three affirmers, as I told you: the oath, the lam, and qad.

The oath is estimated as: By Allah! Indeed, guidance has come to them from their Lord, and the lam is present and (qad) is present, so Allah the Exalted affirms here that guidance has indeed come to them from their Lord,And in His saying:
and there has already come to them from their Lordوَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ
[An-Najm 53:23]
He did not say: (from Allah), indicating that it is not permissible to receive the Shari'ah except from Allah; because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is the Lord, and the Lord is the Creator, the Owner, and the Manager.
the guidanceالْهُدَى
The subject of "came,"And what is meant by it is the knowledge, the opposite of His saying:
They follow not except assumptionإِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ
[Al-An'am 6:116]
and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ الْهُدَى
[An-Najm 53:23]
meaning: the knowledge on the tongues of His messengers, peace and blessings be upon them, who were concluded by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
