Ruling on Keeping a Television in the House to Avoid Family Problems
I am married and have four children, and I have a television in the house. My wife brought in a video, and I did not want it brought in; I prevented it. Another time, the video was brought in and I did not know. So I came and all my children were there, and in it a man was kissing a woman,So I took this video and broke it and hit her and said: By Allah! If you leave the house without my permission, you are forbidden to me. So what is your opinion, O Shaykh? Her brothers came and took her from the house without my knowledge.
We ask Allah to reform her and to reform through her.
First: If her brothers took her without her choice, then she owes nothing. And if they took her with her choice, you owe an oath expiation: feed ten poor people, and she becomes lawful to you.Since you said: You are forbidden to me only,And you did not say: like my mother; because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has explained the ruling of this prohibition in His saying: [Al-Tahrim: 1-2] So Allah made the prohibition an oath, did you understand? As for the television and the video, if it is possible not to bring it into the house, that is better without doubt. And if it is not possible and preventing it leads to great harms, then let it remain in the house; but it is not to be turned on except for news and useful things.
