Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And in the last hours of the night they seek forgiveness)]
Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Dhariyat: 18] (The last hours of the night) is the plural of sahar, which is the end of the night. (They seek forgiveness) from Allah,Meaning: asking Allah for forgiveness. This is part of the excellence of their deeds and their lack of self-admiration, and the fact that they feel that even if they strive, they are falling short, so they seek Allah's forgiveness after performing an act of obedience to make up for any defect in it. You know that it is prescribed at the end of acts of worship for a person to seek forgiveness from his Lord for any defect that may be in them. So after the prayer, a person seeks forgiveness from his Lord three times,And after Hajj, Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Baqarah: 198-199] .
So they ask for forgiveness after their tahajjud, their standing in prayer, and their staying awake in the obedience of Allah, fearing that there may be some shortcoming. This indicates their knowledge of themselves and that they see themselves as falling short, unlike what some people do today: when they worship Allah with the slightest act of worship, they become arrogant and boast to Allah the Exalted with it, and think that they are among the righteous servants of Allah. It is true that a person should hope that if Allah has blessed him with an act of obedience, Allah will accept it. But for him to think that he has completed everything, he is to be feared that his deed will be nullified while he is unaware.
Allah the Exalted said:
And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,
وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَBut when you depart from 'Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash'ar al-Haram. And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray. (199) Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
So they ask for forgiveness after their tahajjud, their standing in prayer, and their staying awake in the obedience of Allah, fearing that there may be some shortcoming.
