The Permissibility of Eating Onions and Garlic Outside of Prayer Times
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
One of the Shaykhs says: I am surprised by people who recite the morning and evening dhikr while eating garlic and onions?
Where is the surprise? The questioner: Meaning: the angels depart from them and are harmed by them.
The Shaykh: This is a mistake;Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say: The angels are harmed by the one who eats onions, or they flee from him, but he prohibited the one who ate onions or garlic from entering the mosque and said: (Indeed, the angels are harmed by what harms the children of Adam) and the meaning is: the angels who are in the mosques who populate them,And if the Messenger had said: Whoever eats garlic or onions, the angels flee from him and are harmed by him,It would have implied that it is forbidden as we said: Keeping images is forbidden; because if a person keeps images, the angels do not enter a house in which there is an image, and for this reason, when the people opened up Khaybar and they fell into eating onions, and it seemed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he disliked them, so they said: It has been made forbidden,He said, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him: (Indeed, it is not for me to forbid what Allah has made lawful) so he made it lawful for them.
And for this reason we say: Eating onions, garlic, leeks, and what is similar to them from the plants that have a smell is not forbidden, but whoever eats them should not approach the mosque; because the angels are harmed by him, yes.
If it were assumed that a person ate them in order to make it a means to abandon the congregation that is obligatory upon him, it would become forbidden at that time; because he is circumventing the dropping of the obligatory,And this is as the people of knowledge (may Allah have mercy on them) said: If a person were to travel in Ramadan in order to break his fast, the travel would become forbidden and the breaking of the fast would become forbidden, he is required to fast even in travel; because he traveled to circumvent the dropping of the obligatory, and circumventing the dropping of the obligations does not drop them, just as circumventing the making lawful of the forbidden does not make them lawful.
