The Conditions for the Obligation of Hajj
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
To proceed: This is the seventy-seventh lesson of the (Al-Liqaa' al-Bab al-Maftuh) series, which takes place every Thursday, and this Thursday is the fourteenth of Dhul-Qa'dah in the year (1418 AH).
We are deviating from our usual practice of presenting tafsir of the verses to address what people need today regarding the rites of pilgrimage.
So we say: Hajj to the House of Allah the Sacred is one of the pillars of Islam. Allah the Exalted made it obligatory upon His servants in His Book, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained its status in the religion. So Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Imran: 97],And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Islam is built on five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakah, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the Sacred House).
The Muslims agreed on its obligation, so it is established by the Book, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. Allah the Exalted made it obligatory upon His servants in the ninth year of the Hijrah,And it was said: in the tenth year. Its obligation was delayed—Allah knows best—because Makkah was previously—Meaning: before the ninth year—under the control of the polytheists, and the polytheists allowed whom they wished to enter and turned away whom they wished. For this reason, they prevented the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from completing the 'Umrah during the Battle of Hudaybiyyah. So Allah did not make Hajj obligatory until Makkah was purified for the Muslims after the Conquest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform Hajj in the ninth year because the delegations from the Arabs increased in that year after the Conquest of Makkah, coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to learn the matters of their religion. So his remaining there—Meaning: in al-Madinah—was easier for many of the Arabs and allowed him (peace and blessings be upon him) more time. Also, the polytheists participated in the Hajj with the Muslims in the ninth year, so Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, chose for the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) Hajj to be in the tenth year, exclusive to the Muslims.
