Straining in Explaining the Connections Between Verses and Chapters

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Some scholars have written in books of tafsir (exegesis) what is called linking verses and chapters, and they have composed works dedicated solely to this. Some of them strain in this linking, even though, as we know, the verses were revealed at different times and in connection with different events, which may be far apart. This linking may involve straining and distant connections. What is the ruling on this?
The ruling on this is that you find those who speak about this straining to find a connection between a verse and the one that follows it. This is undoubtedly a form of straining. We say: The arrangement of the verses is by the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so it is divinely prescribed. Do we know the meaning and the wisdom behind everything that the Shari'ah has brought?Look at His saying:
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayerحَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى
[al-Baqarah: 238] How did this come between the verses regarding the number of rows? Most people do not understand its meaning. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is Wise; a verse may come with such a distance in connection from the one before it that a person is perplexed by it.

So what we see is that a person should say regarding the arrangement of the words of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
We heard and we obeyed.سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا
[al-Baqarah: 285] , and not strain to mention the connections; but there is something clear. For example: When Allah (Mighty and Majestic) mentioned the story of the three who were left behind and He was truthful to them, He said after that:
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ
[al-Tawbah: 119] . So in some verses the connection is clear, and in others there is straining. One should refrain from that. Yes.
