The ruling on accepting an invitation, whether it is a wedding feast or otherwise

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
His Eminence the Shaykh: Is accepting an invitation a recommended practice or obligatory?

As for the invitation to a wedding, accepting it is obligatory, subject to conditions: The first is that he invites you by saying, "O so-and-so, come."

The second: That there is no harm to him in accepting it.

The third: That there is no evil in the place; if there is evil in it, and he is able to change it, he must attend: to accept the invitation and to forbid the evil. If he is not able to change it, he does not accept.
As for other than a wedding feast, the majority of scholars hold that accepting the invitation is a recommended practice and not obligatory. And some scholars said: It is obligatory, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The rights of a Muslim over a Muslim are six—or he said: five—: and when he invites you, you accept." Therefore, a person should not fail to accept an invitation except for an excuse.
