Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And the brothers of Lut)]
As for what we intend to discuss regarding the exegesis, we have previously reached the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Q:13-14] .
His statement: (And the brothers of Lut) means the people of Lut, to whom Lut (peace be upon him) was sent; because they were—may Allah protect us from that—approaching males and leaving women,Meaning: that one would have intercourse with a male and leave the women,As he said to them, (peace be upon him): [Al-Shu'ara:165-166] He called them to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, warned them, and frightened them from this vile act; but they persisted in it,So Allah sent: [Adh-Dhariyat:33-34] meaning: marked, every stone had a mark,Meaning: a sign of upon whom it would descend and strike them.
And this vile trait is among the ugliest of traits, and for this reason its prescribed punishment in the Islamic Shari'ah is execution; because it is greater than unlawful sexual intercourse. If the one who commits unlawful sexual intercourse has not married before, he is flogged one hundred lashes and exiled from the land for a full year. And if he is a muhsan, meaning one who has married and had intercourse with his wife, he is stoned until he dies. As for sodomy, its prescribed punishment is execution in all cases. So if an adult commits sodomy with another adult by their mutual choice, it is obligatory that both the active and passive parties be executed;By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (Whoever you find doing the deed of the people of Lut, kill the active and the passive party) The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: The Companions agreed upon executing him; but they differed on how he should be executed,So one of them said: burned by fire; because of the magnitude of his crime, may Allah protect us from that.
And others said: stoned with stones.
And others said: thrown from the highest place in the land and followed by stones.
And the point is that he, may Allah have mercy on him, transmitted the consensus of the Companions on executing him, and the consensus of the Companions is a proof,So it would be a support for the hadith: (Whoever you find doing the deed of the people of Lut, kill the active and the passive party) .
And because this major sin—may Allah protect us from it—is a sin that corrupts society; because a male society becomes a female society. And it is also not possible to guard against it. Unlawful sexual intercourse can be guarded against if a woman is seen with a man in a place of suspicion, for it is possible to question them; but if a male is seen with a male, how can we question them? And the original state is that a man gathers with a man and does not separate; for this reason, the statement that it is obligatory to execute them is the truth.
As for the people of Lut, you know that Allah the Exalted sent upon them stones of baked clay, marked, and He destroyed them utterly, until He turned the upper part of their city into the lower part.
As for what we intend to discuss regarding the exegesis, we have previously reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(13) And 'Aad and Pharaoh and the brothers of Lot (14) And the companions of the thicket and the people of Tubba'. All denied the messengers, so My threat was justly fulfilled.
His statement: (And the brothers of Lut) means the people of Lut, to whom Lut (peace be upon him) was sent; because they were—may Allah protect us from that—approaching males and leaving women,Meaning: that one would have intercourse with a male and leave the women,As he said to them, (peace be upon him):
(165) Do you approach males among the worlds (166) And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."
(33) To send down upon them stones of clay, (34) Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."
عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِنْ طِينٍ * مُسَوَّمَةًAnd this vile trait is among the ugliest of traits, and for this reason its prescribed punishment in the Islamic Shari'ah is execution; because it is greater than unlawful sexual intercourse.
