The Shaykh Al-Albani’s explanation of the ruling on drawing in the sand, based on the hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: “O Messenger of Allah, some of us draw [lines].” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There was a Prophet who drew lines, so if anyone does it as he drew lines, that is right. قد كان نبيٌّ من الأنبياء يخطُّ ، فَمَن وافَقَ خطُّه خطَّه فذاك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3909Sahih (Al-Albani)
. This is an answer via the method of *ta'wil* (figurative interpretation) by the impossible. He (peace be upon him) answered Mu'awiyah by saying that there were people, just as there are today, who strike the sand... the sand... the causes are many, but the death is one. He (peace be upon him) said:
There was a Prophet who drew lines, so if anyone does it as he drew lines, that is right. قد كان نبيٌّ من الأنبياء يخطُّ ، فَمَن وافق خطُّه خطَّه فذاك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3909Sahih (Al-Albani)
; meaning: A prophet from among the previous prophets before him (peace be upon him) had been given a sign, a prophetic miracle, of striking the sand. They used this means to gain knowledge of some of the unseen. It was a miracle for that prophet. So, if the drawing of one of these fortune-tellers or astrologers matched the drawing of that prophet, then he is the one who is correct. This is called *ta'wil* by the impossible, because it is not possible for anyone after a prophet to attain the knowledge that Allah has exclusively granted to him, to the exclusion of others, merely by employing the same means that that prophet employed. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the master of mankind and the master of the prophets and messengers, is a prophet, but as he said...
Ibrahim b. Suwaid-reported: 'Alqama led us in the noon prayer and be offered five rak'ahs; when the prayer was complete, the people said to him: Abu Shibl, you have offered five rak'ahs. He said: No, I have not done that. They said: Yes (you said five rak'ahs). He (the narrator) said: And I was sitting in a corner among people and I was just a boy. I (also) said: Yes, you have offered five (rak'ahs). He said to me: O, one-eyed, do you say the same thing? I said: Yes. Upon this he turned (his face) and performed two prostrations and then gave salutations, and then reported 'Abdullah as saying: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in prayer and offered five rak'ahs. And as he turned away the people began to whisper amongst themselves. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What is the matter with you? They said: Has the prayer been extended? He said: No. They said: You have in fact said five rak'ahs. He (the Holy Prophet) then turned his back (and faced the Qibla) and performed two prostrations and then gave salutations and further said: Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget. Ibn Numair made this addition:" When any one of you forgets, he must perform two prostrations." إنما أنا بشر مثلكم يُوحى إليَّ
Sahih Muslim 572j
. So, does that mean every human being can now become a prophet, as our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was? The answer is: No, because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) distinguished him first with prophethood, second with messengership, and third, and finally, with the final messengership, encompassing all messengerships and all prophethoods, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Prophethood and messengership have been cut off; there is no messenger or prophet after me. إن النبوة والرسالة قد انقطعت ؛ فلا رسول ولا نبيَّ من بعدي
. This is one of the many refutations of the Qadiyyah sect.
