Explaining the Ruling on Tatayyur (Taking an Omen as a Bad Sign) in Islam from the Hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The hadith reached us... We have arrived at the point or the evidence from the story of Mu'awiyah ibn Hukam al-Sulami. The hadith reached the point where he (peace be upon him) answered Mu'awiyah's question: "Some of us visit the fortune-tellers." He said:
So do not visit them فلا تأتوهم
Why? Because they have proximity to the jinn, and now, may Allah reward you... based on knowledge.
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saw a man driving a Badana (a camel for sacrifice) and said to him, "Ride on it." The man said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! It is a Bandana." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Ride on it, woe to you!" on the second or third time. قال : يا رسول الله ، إنَّ منَّا أقوامًا يتطيَّرون
Sahih al-Bukhari 6160
Do you know that taking an omen is optimism? He said:
So let not [these omens] deter you فلا يصَدَّنَّكم
, and here we must know that taking an omen is a kind of illusion that seizes a person... he is taken by surprise, and up to this point he is not held accountable, of course. But if he goes beyond this illusion and acts on the basis of it, then here he—peace and blessings be upon him—says:
There is no tatayyur (taking an omen as a bad sign) in Islam لا طيرة في الإسلام
In this hadith, the hadith of Mu'awiyah, he says: "Indeed, among us are people who take omens." He said:
So let not [these omens] deter you فلا يصُدَّنَّكم
That is, do not respond to this omen, to this illusion that has occurred to one of your minds, because one does not control this occurrence; however, one does control responding to it, so he is able to not respond to it. For example, I say a man is preparing himself, he wants to travel, and as he is leaving the house, he encounters two people who are quarreling and fighting. One of them says to the other, "May Allah not make you successful, if Allah wills." This falls into the ear of the one who opened the door to go out for his trip. He is terrified as soon as he hears it... not intentionally, but after he opens the door, it overwhelms him and he turns back to the house because he heard the word. This is forbidden and not permissible, because Islam wants to purify people's minds from superstitions. So this coincidence, this thing you were confronted with, you heard it in front of you from a person who did not know that you were... on a trip... so he said to his companion while quarreling with him, "May Allah not make you successful." Why do you respond to it, take it as an omen, and become pessimistic about it, and turn back so you do not complete your trip? This is forbidden in Islam and not permissible. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him and guided him to the middle ruling in Islam. Islam does not say "do not take omens," because you do not control this, as we said, you may be surprised by it. But it tells you "do not respond to the omen," do not respond to the omen. Many things are known; now, among the Muslims, they are living the life of the first pre-Islamic age of ignorance regarding omens. You may know, for example, that it is not permissible... in the house or with the laundry, I do not know, things that perhaps you know better than I do. What is all of this...
The student : ...

The Shaykh : Ah.
The student : Marriage between the two festivals.

The Shaykh : Marriage between the two festivals.
The student : It has become the case that there is no marriage except between two festivals.

The Shaykh : He... this, so this is tatayyur, this is called tatayyur, it is not permissible. So the answer of the Messenger to Mu'awiyah was: "When he said: 'Indeed, among us are people who take omens.'" He said:
So let not [these omens] deter you فلا يصُدَّنَّكم
