The ruling on slaughtering an animal to commemorate the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Some families have the custom in Ramadan of slaughtering an animal and saying: This is a commemoration for the deceased, and they do not mention the virtues of the deceased in it?The Shaykh: What? The questioner: It is called a commemoration for the deceased, and they do not mention the name of the deceased in it,Meaning: they mention just the name, and some of them designate a specific day in Ramadan, and so on every year?
This is one of the religious innovations that was not the custom of the Salaf, and the deceased is remembered by making supplication for him, not by slaughtering an animal for him.

So students of knowledge should warn people against this and say: This is not the way of the Salaf, and also, even if one intends it as a commemoration, Ramadan is not the place for slaughtering animals; slaughtering takes place during the festival of sacrifice.

The questioner: But—O Shaykh—If you asked about this action, he would tell you: I want to remember the deceased.

The Shaykh: If it is for the sake of the deceased, then give charity in dirhams, but as for slaughtering an animal and intending to dedicate the sacrificial animals to Ramadan, this is not correct.

The questioner: He does not intend to transfer the sacrifice; rather, he sacrifices during the festival of sacrifice.

The Shaykh: This means he sacrifices twice: once in Ramadan and once in Dhu al-Hijjah.
